VATICAN CITY - Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl who is implicated in the sex abuse cover-up scandal.

Wuerl, the former bishop of Pittsburgh, has been scrutinized since the release of a grand jury report on child sex abuse by priests in six Pennsylvania dioceses.

He was named nearly 200 times for his alleged involvement in the cover-up.

Wuerl served as bishop for the Diocese of Pittsburgh from 1988 to 2006. After the August release of the grand jury report, calls for his resignation began.

In light of the grand jury report and a petition, Wuerl’s name was removed from North Catholic High School. His name had been added to the school in 2013 when it moved from Pittsburgh Troy Hill neighborhood to Cranberry Township.

The best thing the Church can do, in my opinion, is to be as public and transparent as possible in dealing with this. That said, they have to make real changes, or it’s just lip service.

What would a Cardinal do have resigning?

For the most part, the changes that are needed involve living what we profess and applying the best governing mechanisms that are in place to enhance that, rather than the worst ones to hinder the process.

I agree that greater transparency would likely help, especially in dealing with clerical abusers.

Can we Catholics expect and accept the pope’s resignation?

Catholic leadership should be PROACTIVE in dealing with their problems, not sitting around waiting for people to resign.

Pope Francis accepts resignation of Cardinal Donald Wuerl, appoints him interim DC leader

Hold the champagne! Not only did Frankie then appoint him administrator for the DC diocese, but he praised him as a “model bishop” and that he showed “great nobility” by ignoring requests to explain his actions over the years and refusing to respond to complaints.

In other words, Bergoglio flipped us the bird and canonized Wuerl and all his works.

Until the homosexual cabal within the Church hierarchy is rooted out, it will be business as usual.

Bergoglio did indeed ask him to stay on till he announces a replacement for him. This will never be done as long as Bergoglio remains pope. He coddles and protects these sodomite priests. What Donna Wuerl needs to worry about is criminal charges brought against him by the DA. Bravo Dolan should also be packing his suitcases because he’s been covering for these perverts for years. When the investigation on the Archdiocese of NYC is completed it’ll make the Philadelphia investigation look small.

In what some are seeing as a slap in the face to those who wanted Wuerl gone, Pope Francis has kept him on as apostolic administrator in Washington, D.C. until a successor is named.
