Sochi, October 19, Interfax - Russia would use nuclear weapons only after it is certain that a potential aggressor has launched a strike on it, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.
"Our strategy of nuclear weapons use doesn't envision a preemptive strike. Our concept is a launch under attack," Putin said at the plenary session of the Valdai Club in Sochi.
This means that Russia is ready to use and would use nuclear weapons "only when we are certain that someone, a potential aggressor, is delivering a strike on Russia."
The essence of Russia's launch-under-attack nuclear strategy is that "the aggressor should know: revenge is inevitable, and it will be destroyed anyway," he said.
"And we, as victims of aggression, will go straight to paradise as martyrs, while they will simply pop off," Putin said, causing the audience to laugh. "Because they won't even have time to regret," he said.
Putin needs to go to church more.
You don’t go to paradise because you were a victim. Just like you don’t pop off or go to hell because you were on an aggressor’s team.
He’s clearly versed in Islamic theology though.
In 2010, he explicitly stated: “Orthodox Christianity closer to Islam than Catholicism”
“From very beginning,” the Russian leader said, “Russia was built up as a multi-national and multi-confessional state.” And after saying that “the state exists to serve the interests of the majority,” he added, “you know, we have Eastern Christianity and certain theoreticians say that it is much closer to Islam than [Roman] Catholicism is.”

This is interesting as we are celebrating what would have been Russel Kirk's 100th birthday.
I was lucky; met and spoke with Kirk in 1981-82 about nuclear war with the Soviet Union. He said the Communists, being atheists, would never want a war because it would mean the end of their secular "Worker's Paradise," as they didn't believe in heaven!

It was pretty obviously a joke. The Russian sense of humor is actually pretty funny if you learn about it. The mother-in-law genre is especially wry.
