In thin-skinned times such as these, Archbishop Viganò’s most recent letter shines forth as a clarion call to Catholics everywhere. As I finished reading Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò’s third letter, I had an immediate sense that I had just read something destined to be one of the great pastoral and literary moments of the Church’s history. There was an air of greatness about it that I cannot fully describe. I was stunned at its soteriological quality — at its stirring and yet stark reminder of our own judgment day. In effect he reminded us that this is more than a quibble over terminology or who wins on this or that point, or who is respectful enough of whom. This is about the salvation of souls, including our own. We almost never hear bishops or priests speak like this today!

Some will surely bristle at the Archbishop’s “strong language.” But I ask you, is it really so different from the way the Lord Jesus spoke? Perhaps the bristling is more emblematic of our dainty and thin-skinned times — times marked by identity politics, cries of victimization, and every form of shock and outrage over the slightest reproach. In my estimation this letter of Archbishop Viganò will go down in history as one of the great moments of pastoral exhortation and integrity. It will shine forth as a clarion call in an age of timid silence from too many other prelates and priests. May the Archbishop’s courage inspire many more to come forth and respectfully but clearly insist on answers and honesty. May his warning on our Judgement Day be salutary. May repentance, renewal and courage be growing realities in God’s Church!

Amazing that Charles Pope is still active and at his post at the Archdiocese of Washington, where Wuerl (still in charge) has crushed priests for far less than this.

You know The Big Wuerl-Wolf's canine teeth must be itching about now. How much longer do you think Fr. Charles Pope will be allowed to keep telling the truth in the Archdiocese of Washington?

I had the same feeling that Msgr Pope did when I read Viganò’s third letter. I knew I was reading something that someday will be quoted, cited, and form a real testament of faith. He reminded them of the eternal stakes in this game and of the real meaning and direction of human life. And did so with great humility, just as a believer. (Something they obviously are not...)
That is quite an essay. It should get donna’s lingerie in a wad.
Even the donna is only apostolic administrator right now, this essay is not without a little risk to Msgr. Pope.

The homosexual mafia is a leprosy destroying the Church. May God bless and protect these brave men.
Wuerl as “only” APostolic Administrator means he’s still the same old Wuerl-Wolf but with newly-dry-cleaned Sheep’s Clothing.
The difference is that while he remains powerful, the lower clergy see he is on the way out the door, and thus, some may resist coercion to carry out his evil deeds.

I don’t think Wuerl can do anything with him without causing a major fiasco.
Well you have to remember that Wuerl is going or has stepped down.
Pope Francis heaped effusive praise on Wuerl even as he was depriving him of his t5itle. I see it as a cynical, almost mocking move: literally nominal.
I hope you two are right about Wuerl being decisively weakened by this move. Time will tell.
When the tyrant looks like he will live forever (or at least an interminably long time), his powers may be invincible. When the tyrant’s time grows short, his subjects may decide it is possible to wait him out.
As well, the perverse example of the pervert mccarrick perversely shows that punishments incurred in the short-run may be reversed upon regime change. If change is imminent, minions may disobey, or at least tarry in the execution of their duties in anticipation of the new tyrant, if for no other reason than to refrain to commit actions that may prospectively offend the new regime.
I mean, Wuerl-Wolf had already handed in his pro-forma resignation 2 years ago, when he turned 75. I think The Big Humble was just saying, "OK, Consigliere, you pretend to retire and I'll pretend to accept it. But everyone can see I'm keeping you on, Padrino."
Monsignor Pope is a very brave man and I pray there will be MANY more like him that speak up and defend Archbishop Vigano and speak the truth. Maybe this will give more priests out in the trenches the courage to speak up publicly. I know there are many priests voicing concerns privately but there needs to be a flood of voices from the priesthood. Do you think Monsignor Pope could open that door?

Probably not much longer. however, Monsignor Pope is a smart and shrewd man. He must have known the risk he was taking in publishing this piece, and he believed it was the right thing to do. Let the chips fall where they may!
I pray for this Pope. (And I’m afraid he is going to need it badly.)
