This week's "Why the New Testament Was Written" vlog (part 10) is about why Luke wrote Acts (if you couldn't tell by the title). We also delve into the importance of Acts in apologetics...Luke's writings vividly detail his historical environment, which is crucial to verifying the truth of Christianity.

Why Luke Wrote Acts

Video clocks in at 12:41. Three critical sources: "The Untold Story of the New Testament" by Frank Viola, "Cold Case Christianity" by J Warner Wallace, and "I Don't Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist" by Frank Turek and Norman Geisler.

The scripture is not a creation of man, it’s God breathed.

That is a fundamental belief.

My point being - the bible is not a collection of words by men, it is a collection of words of God, written down by men. 2 Peter 1:21 2 Tim 3:16-17

The Holy Spirit is infallible. Men who wrote the Books of the Bible did not write their own ideas or doctrines. They were moved or “carried along” by the infallible Holy Spirit.

This has been the belief of mainline Christianity since the Nicene Creed.

Does that mean the books of the New Testament just materialized out of thin air?

There was no historical reason for the apostles to write them? If that’s the case, why did Luke address both his books to “Theophilus and the Gentiles”?

Thanks for posting. This is your best video so far. I’ve watched all of them, and they are very informative.

Your comment about how God often uses something for His kingdom in unexpected ways is a great practical example and application of the overall theme of your series.

I think it would be interesting to note that Luke only wrote two books of the New Testament, but his words comprise about 27%. Paul’s words comprise about 23%, though he wrote more books of the New Testament than any other writer.

WHY each NT author wrote the book is because they were guided by the Holy Spirit to do so, as well as WHAT they put into it.

Men are errant - so, if the author is hot the Holy Spirit, through the person of the scribe (writer of the NT, or OT scripture) then the whole book can be errant.

In fact, Paul says in no less than 3 places (1 Cor 7:12, 1 Cor 7:25, 1 Cor 11:17) when he is writing according to Paul’s will versus the Holy Spirit leading him.

So, you CAN say there are 3 versus in the NT that are not God-Breathed. Paul tells us which ones HE wrote.

Indeed.

Could you check you mail? I bet he wrote you a third and fourth one too. I would like to read about what happened next.

1. Because he felt like it.

2. Because the Spirit moved him.

I opt to believe 2.
