Vocab Malone explained this a little in a video he uploaded earlier today, where he was taking questions about the new drama based on Luther's life.

If he hadn't been under the protection of Frederick the Wise, he probably would have suffered a similar fate to the lives chronicled in Foxe's Book of Martyrs.

Oh baloney! He was an egotist who, having been approached by the vatican to acquiesce, instead continued to push in the direction he was going.
