January 14 - Jesus’ Real Food—Obeying the Father

“He answered and said, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God”’” (Matthew 4:4).

Above all, Satan’s temptations of Jesus Christ solicited His rebellion against the Father. But Jesus had come to earth to do the Father’s will and nothing else. In fact, His will and the Father’s were precisely the same (John 5:30; cf. 10:30; Heb. 10:9).

Case in point: In the ultimate test of obedience, just prior to His arrest and betrayal, Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.”. . . “My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done” (Matt. 26:39, 42). This supreme example of absolute trust and submission by Jesus to His Father is what Satan tried to smash. In his proudest and wickedest manner, the enemy attempted to fracture the Trinitarian nature of the Godhead.

But Christ, in His immeasurable humility and righteousness, replied to Satan’s first words, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’” All three of our Lord’s responses to Satan would begin with the simple but straightforward appeal to the Word of God—“It is written” (cf. Ps. 119:11). In quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, Jesus affirmed that believers are far better off depending on God and waiting on His provision than they are in grabbing for their own satisfaction—something we all are tempted to do.

Ask Yourself

You may feel unsure of what God’s will is for you, but much of it is spelled out clearly in Scripture. How well are you obeying the aspects of His will that have already been revealed to you? In seeking to know His plan, a good place to start is always obedience to His Word.

“It is written,

almost everything Jesus says is a direct or indirect quote of scripture. Now what is the scripture he is quoting? We should all spend more time in the OT. It is not one or the other...…………………………….

But note many can quote scripture. Satan doesn’t have the music only the words. It takes Jesus/Holy Spirit to add the music. The Apostles did for sure. Do We?

Following are some direct quotes:

(Matthew 4:4) But Jesus told Him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

(Matthew 4:6) and said, “If You are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order His angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’”

(Matthew 4:7) Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.’”

(Matthew 4:10) “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only Him.’”

(Matthew 11:10) John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You, and he will prepare Your way before You.’

(Matthew 12:3) Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?

(Matthew 19:4) “Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male and female.’

(Matthew 21:13) He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves!”

(Matthew 21:16) They asked Jesus, “Do You hear what these children are saying?” “Yes,” Jesus replied. “Haven’t you ever read the Scriptures? For they say, ‘You have taught children and infants to give You praise.’”

(Matthew 21:42) Then Jesus asked them, “Didn’t you ever read this in the Scriptures? ‘The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. This is the LORD’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.’

(Matthew 22:29) Jesus replied, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.

(Matthew 22:31) “But now, as to whether there will be a resurrection of the dead—haven’t you ever read about this in the Scriptures? Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, God said,

(Matthew 26:24) For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays Him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”

(Matthew 26:31) On the way, Jesus told them, “Tonight all of you will desert Me. For the Scriptures say, ‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

(Matthew 26:54) But if I did, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that describe what must happen now?”

(Matthew 26:56) But this is all happening to fulfill the words of the prophets as recorded in the Scriptures.” At that point, all the disciples deserted Him and fled.

(Mark 2:25) Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?

(Mark 4:12) so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: ‘When they see what I do, they will learn nothing. When they hear what I say, they will not understand. Otherwise, they will turn to Me and be forgiven.’”

(Mark 9:12) Jesus responded, “Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with utter contempt?

(Mark 9:13) But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they chose to abuse him, just as the Scriptures predicted.”

(Mark 11:17) He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer for all nations,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.”

(Mark 12:10) Didn’t you ever read this in the Scriptures? ‘The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.

(Mark 12:24) Jesus replied, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.

(Mark 14:21) For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays Him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”

(Mark 14:27) On the way, Jesus told them, “All of you will desert Me. For the Scriptures say, ‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

(Mark 14:49) Why didn’t you arrest Me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about Me.”

(Luke 4:4) But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’”

(Luke 4:8) Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only Him.’”

(Luke 4:10) For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order His angels to protect and guard you.

(Luke 4:12) Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.’”

(Luke 4:16) When He came to the village of Nazareth, His boyhood home, He went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.

(Luke 6:3) Jesus replied, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?

(Luke 7:27) John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You, and he will prepare Your way before You.’

(Luke 8:10) He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: ‘When they look, they won’t really see. When they hear, they won’t understand.’

(Luke 19:46) He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.”

(Luke 21:22) For those will be days of God’s vengeance, and the prophetic words of the Scriptures will be fulfilled.

(Luke 24:25) Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures.

(Luke 24:27) Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

(Luke 24:32) They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as He talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”

(Luke 24:45) Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.

(John 2:17) Then His disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume Me.”

(John 2:22) After He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered He had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said.

(John 5:39) “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to Me!

(John 6:31) After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, ‘Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

(John 6:45) As it is written in the Scriptures, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to Me.

(John 7:38) Anyone who believes in Me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”

(John 7:42) For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born.”

(John 7:52) They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Search the Scriptures and see for yourself—no prophet ever comes from Galilee!”

(John 10:34) Jesus replied, “It is written in your own Scriptures that God said to certain leaders of the people, ‘I say, you are gods!’

(John 10:35) And you know that the Scriptures cannot be altered. So if those people who received God’s message were called ‘gods,’

(John 15:25) This fulfills what is written in their Scriptures: ‘They hated Me without cause.’

(John 17:12) During My time here, I protected them by the power of the name You gave Me. I guarded them so that not one was lost, except the one headed for destruction, as the Scriptures foretold.

(John 19:36) These things happened in fulfillment of the Scriptures that say, “Not one of His bones will be broken,”

(John 20:9) for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead.

(Acts 1:16) “Brothers,” He said, “the Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David.

(Acts 4:11) For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’

(Acts 4:13) The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.

(Acts 17:2) As was Paul’s custom, he went to the synagogue service, and for three Sabbaths in a row he used the Scriptures to reason with the people.

(Acts 17:11) And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.

(Acts 18:24) Meanwhile, a Jew named Apollos, an eloquent speaker who knew the Scriptures well, had arrived in Ephesus from Alexandria in Egypt.

(Acts 18:28) He refuted the Jews with powerful arguments in public debate. Using the Scriptures, he explained to them that Jesus was the Messiah.

(Acts 23:5) “I’m sorry, brothers. I didn’t realize he was the high priest,” Paul replied, “for the Scriptures say, ‘You must not speak evil of any of your rulers.’”

(Acts 28:23) So a time was set, and on that day a large number of people came to Paul’s lodging. He explained and testified about the Kingdom of God and tried to persuade them about Jesus from the Scriptures. Using the law of Moses and the books of the prophets, he spoke to them from morning until evening.

(Romans 1:2) God promised this Good News long ago through His prophets in the holy Scriptures.

(Romans 1:17) This Good News tells us how God makes us right in His sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”

(Romans 2:24) No wonder the Scriptures say, “The Gentiles blaspheme the name of God because of you.”

(Romans 3:4) Of course not! Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true. As the Scriptures say about Him, “You will be proved right in what you say, and You will win Your case in court.”

(Romans 3:10) As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous—not even one.

(Romans 4:3) For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.”

(Romans 4:17) That is what the Scriptures mean when God told him, “I have made you the father of many nations.” This happened because Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing.

(Romans 8:36) (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”)

(Romans 9:7) Being descendants of Abraham doesn’t make them truly Abraham’s children. For the Scriptures say, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted,” though Abraham had other children, too.

(Romans 9:13) In the words of the Scriptures, “I loved Jacob, but I rejected Esau.”

(Romans 9:17) For the Scriptures say that God told Pharaoh, “I have appointed you for the very purpose of displaying My power in you and to spread My fame throughout the earth.”

(Romans 9:33) God warned them of this in the Scriptures when He said, “I am placing a stone in Jerusalem that makes people stumble, a rock that makes them fall. But anyone who trusts in Him will never be disgraced.”

(Romans 10:11) As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in Him will never be disgraced.”

(Romans 10:15) And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”

(Romans 11:2) No, God has not rejected His own people, whom He chose from the very beginning. Do you realize what the Scriptures say about this? Elijah the prophet complained to God about the people of Israel and said,

(Romans 11:8) As the Scriptures say, “God has put them into a deep sleep. To this day He has shut their eyes so they do not see, and closed their ears so they do not hear.”

(Romans 11:26) And so all Israel will be saved. As the Scriptures say, “The One who rescues will come from Jerusalem, and He will turn Israel away from ungodliness.

(Romans 12:19) Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the LORD.

(Romans 14:11) For the Scriptures say, “’As surely as I live,’ says the LORD, ‘every knee will bend to Me, and every tongue will confess and give praise to God. ‘”

(Romans 15:3) For even Christ didn’t live to please Himself. As the Scriptures say, “The insults of those who insult you, O God, have fallen on me.”

(Romans 15:4) Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.

(Romans 15:21) I have been following the plan spoken of in the Scriptures, where it says, “Those who have never been told about Him will see, and those who have never heard of Him will understand.”

(1 Corinthians 1:19) As the Scriptures say, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.”

(1 Corinthians 1:31) Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD.”

(1 Corinthians 2:9) That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.”

(1 Corinthians 3:19) For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.”

(1 Corinthians 4:6) Dear brothers and sisters, I have used Apollos and myself to illustrate what I’ve been saying. If you pay attention to what I have quoted from the Scriptures, you won’t be proud of one of your leaders at the expense of another.

(1 Corinthians 5:13) God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You must remove the evil person from among you.”

(1 Corinthians 6:16) And don’t you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the Scriptures say, “The two are united into one.”

(1 Corinthians 10:7) or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.”

(1 Corinthians 14:21) It is written in the Scriptures: “I will speak to My own people through strange languages and through the lips of foreigners. But even then, they will not listen to Me,” says the LORD.

(1 Corinthians 15:3) I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.

(1 Corinthians 15:4) He was buried, and He was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.

(1 Corinthians 15:27) For the Scriptures say, “God has put all things under His authority.” (Of course, when it says “all things are under His authority,” that does not include God Himself, who gave Christ His authority.)

(1 Corinthians 15:45) The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.” But the last Adam—that is, Christ—is a life-giving Spirit.

(2 Corinthians 8:15) As the Scriptures say, “Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over, and those who gathered only a little had enough.”

(2 Corinthians 9:9) As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”

(2 Corinthians 10:17) As the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD.”

(2 Corinthians 13:1) This is the third time I am coming to visit you (and as the Scriptures say, “The facts of every case must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses”).

(Galatians 3:8) What’s more, the Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would declare the Gentiles to be righteous because of their faith. God proclaimed this good news to Abraham long ago when He said, “All nations will be blessed through you.”

(Galatians 3:10) But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under His curse, for the Scriptures say, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.”

(Galatians 3:11) So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”

(Galatians 3:13) But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When He was hung on the cross, He took upon Himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”

(Galatians 3:22) But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God’s promise of freedom only by believing in Jesus Christ.

(Galatians 4:22) The Scriptures say that Abraham had two sons, one from his slave wife and one from his freeborn wife.

(Galatians 4:30) But what do the Scriptures say about that? “Get rid of the slave and her son, for the son of the slave woman will not share the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”

(Ephesians 4:8) That is why the Scriptures say, “When He ascended to the heights, He led a crowd of captives and gave gifts to His people.”

(Ephesians 5:31) As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”

(1 Timothy 4:13) Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.

(2 Timothy 3:15) You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.

(Hebrews 2:6) For in one place the Scriptures say, “What are mere mortals that You should think about them, or a son of man that You should care for him?

(Hebrews 4:4) We know it is ready because of the place in the Scriptures where it mentions the seventh day: “On the seventh day God rested from all His work.”

(Hebrews 10:7) Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do Your will, O God—as is written about Me in the Scriptures.’”

(James 2:8) Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

(James 2:23) And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God.

(James 4:5) What do you think the Scriptures mean when they say that the spirit God has placed within us is filled with envy?

(James 4:6) But He gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.”

(1 Peter 1:16) For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”

(1 Peter 1:24) As the Scriptures say, “People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades.

(1 Peter 2:6) As the Scriptures say, “I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen for great honor, and anyone who trusts in Him will never be disgraced.”

(1 Peter 3:10) For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.

Is that all the places in the NT where the OT is quoted?

That’s awesome!
