What do United Methodists really believe?

The United Methodist Church is a big tent theologically, and people with conservative or traditional religious beliefs make up the largest group under that spreading canvas. Those are two key findings from a new United Methodist Communications survey of United Methodists in the United States.

The survey dug into views on various theology-related subjects, including the Bible, Jesus, salvation, the Resurrection and the afterlife. The goal was to shed light on the beliefs of people in the pews of United Methodist churches.

Of those contacted, 44 percent identified themselves as conservative/traditional in religious beliefs, 28 percent as moderate/centrist and 20 percent as progressive/liberal. These terms were used to describe theological views only and do not necessarily reflect social or political views.

Actually I think the 28% is the bigger problem.

The last Methodist preacher I had was a lesbian who thought animals had souls exactly the way we do, and that Jesus had some cool ideas and was worth paying attention to — and whether or not he was the Son of God didn’t really matter.

The Methodists, Presbyterians, etc. will all probably be taken over as was the Episcopal Church and destroy themselves.

Once upon a time the Episcopal Church was one of the most conservative churches in America. I grew up in that church and when I was a kid I loved it, was altar boy, the whole nine yards. Now I won’t claim them at all. The last 35 plus years the church has moved so far left I can’t recognize it. The last three or four presiding Bishops have destroyed this fine church.

I am at the point I just pray at home.

Nothing. If they believe anything, they are whatever things won’t upset their congregations: abortion, homosexuality, extra-marriage affairs, etc. They just don’t want to offend anybody anymore (except God . . . they have no problem with that). Just don’t wanna’ make their congregations upset, ya’ know.

What it means to be a Methodist. 1961 at 12 years of age I was at Methodist Sunday School and was told there would be a class to learn what it means to be a Methodist. Afterwards I would be baptized. I was the only kid from the entire Congregation who went to the class. The teacher spent 4 Sundays reading from the Bible Stories Book of the story of the kid with the Coat of Many Colors and the Drought and the brothers and the grain storage. 5th Sunday I was baptized. I think I learned that I should save for a rainy day. About 10 years later I went to Methodist Bible study with the college class. I learned a lot about the Christian Religion. On the Simpsons Bart did ask what does it mean to be a Methodist? The retreats to the camp ground with softball and cookouts were fun.

Sounds like a Unitarian, not a Methodist!

What do United Methodists really believe?

Its leadership believes its membership exists as an endless source of money. Further, that same leadership's real religion is rabid liberalism.

Departed that insane asylum over 40 years ago. God was kicked out long before I left.

Susan Cole? She was totally wigged out. She wrote a book about God being a woman, and actually was tried by the UMC court, but that was long ago. Even so, they let her stay in the pulpit.

The United Methodist Church founded Hand Gun Control Inc. I’ll stop before I say any more and get banned, but suffice to say I’ll never be a Methodist nor shed a tear if that church goes away.

Once upon a time the Episcopal Church was one of the most conservative churches in America.

Same with the Methodists. No drinking at any time, and on Sunday no dancing, movies, card playing, etc. Church twice on Sunday and also mid-week, year-round. It was then the "Methodist Episcopal" church and very similar to the EC.

I am at the point I just pray at home.

Try the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS) if there is one near you. (That is absolutely NOT the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America - ELCA).

LCMS: No female pastors! Socially conservative! No LGBT indulgences! And the motto is "Sola Gratia, Sola Fede, Sola Scriptura" — "We are saved by Grace, through Faith, and the Bible is our sole source of authority." The preaching is about the scriptures and what they mean, not about Democrat talking points, rainbows or unicorns. There is a catechism written by Martin Luther, whose aim was not to introduce "progress", but to return the corrupted church to the Apostolic faith as taught by Jesus to the apostles. Most of the people are educated and devout, and the hymns are wonderful.

Indeed. A survey like that one conducted for the LCMS would come out something like:

The Methodist Board of Church in Society opposes the death penalty, believes in unrestricted immigration, and advocates for banning handguns and semi-automatic firearms.

I totally, totally love that graphic!!! After years with the UMC, the first time I sat in an LCMS pew and heard the pastor say, “We don’t support birth control, living in sin, abortion or gay marriage”, I almost fell right out of the pew in shock. Hallelujah!
