Christians laud decision to exempt Bibles from Trump’s tariff hike on Chinese goods

Christian leaders are hailing the Trump administration's decision to remove Bibles and other religious books from its lists of Chinese goods facing a 10 percent hike in tariffs.

The office of U.S. Trade Ambassador Robert E. Lighthizer said Tuesday that the 10 percent tariff hike on Chinese goods starting Sept. 1 won’t affect Bibles, according to multiple reports.

On Tuesday, the USTR released two lists of items that will be subject to tariffs starting Sept. 1 and items in which tariffs will be applied on Dec. 15.

Christian publishers are also welcoming the development because of how it would affect the production of Bibles.

"For the past several months, there has been great concern among the Christian publishing community that our important work would be threatened by proposed tariff schedules," LifeWay Christian Resources President Ben Mandrell said in a statement.

"This announcement by the U.S. Trade Representative has given us hope that the administration has heard our concern."

How this must look to the Lord. His Word is being printed in a country where the government denies Him, perverts justice at every turn, viciously persecutes His children, and is doing everything in its power to keep its people from having His Word. And the Church here, with so much earthly freedom at its disposal which is only in addition to the power of the Almighty available from on high, more or less turns a blind eye to it all, raising no warning even while importing God's Word under those conditions, with the main concern being the price the Bibles will be. One day the Lord will show us our works here, and we're choosing now whether or not He'll show us that we lived like David, with faith in God's power and righteousness, going up against Goliath.

I’m screwed when He comes back, but that aside, I was thinking the EXACT SAME THING when I read this.

This is the BIG CONCERN?!?!

That we wont be able to buy Bibles from a Godless country that BARELY puts up with Christians and some day again won’t even pretend anymore.

SMH

There’s not ONE God fearing American businessman who would either forego profits or be savvy enough to make a profit by producing them in THIS country??

Just wow.

This article and thread is more important than meets the eye.

It speaks volumes.

About too many things.

I would not trust the Chinese to accurately print the word of the Lord.

I have no problem with it. Print all the Bibles you want in China. I wish they were all printed over there. People are resourceful and will find ways to steal them. And during production, someone has to look sometimes.
Someone in QC has to read a page here, a page there.

The factory will probably stearly warn them from reading it. And that works about the same as telling your daughter she may not date that one certain guy.

And kudos to Trump for thinking of this.

And the cheaper we make them, the more people see them.

Best of all, I wanna hear the left response when they learn Trump exempted BIBLES from the tariff. That alone is worth the fun.

Many Bibles are printed in China, especially recently. I have three on my desk: All were printed in China. Two are from Zondervan, one from Thomas Nelson.

A new, USA printed Bible tends to be expensive. I am a collector, or sorts. Italy and South Korea occasionally show up as printing Bibles.

I wonder what a Chinese Bible factory is like? Are they warned to not read it? Do they take pains to only hire people who don’t speak english?

I have wondered the same, and like the previous poster, hope the workers find a chance to read the Bibles they print.

I like Bibles with a rough background. My favorite is a Gideon version given to me by a cop I sorta know. There was a seedy hotel on Central in Albuquerque getting torn down. It was a rough place the last several decades before. Dope, whores, you name it.
So he was walking through to chase out any bums so they didn’t start any fires.

He found an unopened box of Gideon bibles meant for the hotel rooms. I got one.

I like knowing that about it when I read it.

FYI

In over five years of participation as the leader of a group in the making of Braille Bibles not one book has been ordered from or shipped to China from our unit despite the books being offered at no cost and shipped without charge. Most orders are from the Western Hemisphere and Africa although our most recent assignment calls for five-hundred copies of the entire Braille Bible to be sent to Indonesia. This will take time as all work is performed by volunteers and solely supported by donations from volunteers and members or their church.

Sometimes God uses ways foreign to us to advance His word. Wonder how many Chinese may sneak a Bible out or “proofread” it for quality.

I’d wonder how many Chinese allowed to work in a Bible print shop can read English.
