Pope Francis Praises Italian Fishers for Ridding the Sea of Plastic
Vatican News ^ | 1/19/20 | Lydia O'Kane

The Pope expresses his appreciation for the voluntary work fishers from the Marche region of Italy are doing to rid the seabed of plastic. He also urges them to hold firm to their Christian values.

Greeting the fishers from San Benedetto del Tronto in the Marche region of Italy, Pope Francis had words of encouragement for those gathered, urging them not to lose hope in the face of “inconveniences and uncertainties” which they face in their work.

Passion and sacrifice

You sail along the Marche coast, he said, “in good and bad weather to take from the sea what is necessary to live, with so much passion, so many sacrifices and even some danger. And your loved ones share the difficulties and the precariousness that this kind of life of yours involves.”

The Pope noted that fishers can sometimes feel tempted by the desire for a safe job on land. Yet, he added, “those born of the sea cannot eradicate the sea from their hearts.”

The Pontiff also pointed out that their often “risky and hard work needs to be valued, supporting your rights and your legitimate aspirations.”

Fishing for Plastic

During his address, Pope Francis expressed his particular appreciation for the voluntary work they are doing to rid the seabed of plastic.

He described this initiative as “very important, both for the large amount of waste, especially plastic waste” that has been recovered and hailed the fact that it is already becoming a model in other areas of Italy and abroad.

If he ever talks about Jesus, the Bible and turning from sins, I’ll faint.

Beat me to it.

This Pope spends too much time looking down at the earth, he needs to look up more often.

By their fruits, you shall know them

Thinking you are right.

Suspect Francis did not adopt his papal name from some dead white guy from some town called Assisi. Instead, he took Francis in tribute to a certain City By The Bay known for it’s penchant for weird life style choices

Is it somehow wrong to be a good steward of the Creation?

Who gets to define “good steward”? Why is being a good steward becoming so prominint at mass all of a sudden? Where in the Bible do we look for direction in all of this sudden concern for an impermanent place constructed of dust?

The World has turned upside down.

The point that you make, as well as that Francis has on occasion, I am confident, spoken of Jesus—and even against the devil, may all be made in his favour, but I, and other Catholic Freepers, seem to be too demoralized to make the points.

So God has raised up someone else to defend the Pope.

That it would be you shows that the workings of grace are indeed mysterious.

It is right and just to give even the devil his due.

If you, or any of the rest of the gang, would be willing to do the work that even the Knights of Columbus on the forum have despaired to do on those threads that are non-caucus, I, for one, would be grateful.

I am by no means defending the pope. If you pay attention to my postings I do not believe Roman Catholicism follows the New Testament teachings which are the only infallible documents we have and in fact have indeed strayed considerably from them.

That said, I ask the question again....is it wrong to be a good steward of the Creation God has given to us?

And trust me, I am by no means a "greenie".

If you want clean water....keep the water clean.

This isn't real complicated.

Everyone, in theory, ought to be willing to defend other people insofar as the need and deserve defence—it is part of loving one’s neighbour. Most people do some good things (naturally speaking, without cooperating with grace at God’s initiative no one can do anything that is worth speaking about in eternity).

It is part of at least giving people a reward on earth to which they are entitled.

You are not defending everything the Pope does, but not even the strictest Catholic is obliged to do that.

Nor is one obliged to defend everything that greenies say.

But both greenies and the Pope do at least occasionally find an acorn, or happen to be right twice a day.

So I salute you in defending Pope Francis.

If you believe that in defending Pope Francis you are not defending the Pope, I would note that you would find yourself in good(?) company on many Catholic Caucus threads. I am of the opinion that in defending Francis you are defending the Pope, but probably should not wade too heavily into the quasi-side vacantist debate at this point.

Oddly, from my faith perspective, that you do not hold that in defending Francis you do not believe you are defending the Pope, is something I am inclined to take into account. If you were fuming about how he is the anti-Christ I would be more inclined to continue to try to take him seriously.

Naa….there's enough Roman Catholic who are throwing ya'lls pope under the bus.....some even suggesting the position you noted in your last sentence.

That’s how it started out but you have perhaps noticed a certain sort of person taking over the movement in the past 50 years. THEY say what’s good and what’s “evil” now. Those idiots say we have 11.40 yrs left.
