CNA Staff, Apr 29, 2020 / 03:30 pm MT (CNA).- New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio apologized on Wednesday afternoon, hours after sending a tweet that singled out “the Jewish community” while warning of consequences for groups if they violate social distancing orders during the coronavirus pandemic.
"I regret if the way I say it in any way gave people a feeling of being treated the wrong way — it was not my intention," said de Blasio on Wednesday, referring to the past evening’s controversial tweet. De Blasio characterized his comments as “tough love.”
The previous evening, the mayor tweeted that he had instructed the city’s police force to issue summons to or arrest people who congregate in large groups. De Blasio specifically singled out the Jewish population of the city in his warning.
“My message to the Jewish community, and all communities, is this simple: the time for warnings has passed. I have instructed the NYPD to proceed immediately to summons or even arrest those who gather in large groups. This is about stopping this disease and saving lives. Period.” de Blasio said just after 9:30 p.m. on April 28.
De Blasio’s tweet was in response to a funeral held earlier in the evening for Rabbi Chaim Mertz, who died from COVID-19. The funeral service drew a large crowd of members of the Hasidic community to the streets of Williamsburg. The group was dispersed by NYPD officers. No one attending the funeral was arrested.
The mayor said that when he heard about the funeral, he “went there myself to ensure the crowd was dispersed.”
“And what I saw WILL NOT be tolerated so long as we are fighting the Coronavirus,” he tweeted.

DeBlasio is only apologizing because he got serious push back, and not because he knows he was wrong.
There were SO MANY people in the parks in brooklyn a few days ago.
Cops didn’t stop folks in groups or folks not wearing masks.
de blasio should have just said “Just because I don’t like Jews, especially Orthodox, doesn’t mean I singled you Jews out. Because I like Jews. Really”
Living here you get a feel for what your mayor is.
And I’ve NO DOUBT he’s antisemitic.
And i’m SURE his black, lesbian, hundreds of millions stealing wife is too.
The Jews in name only will kiss his butt and fund his bs.

I have no idea if he is antisemitic. I hope he is not. 2500 people. Plenty not wearing masks. Photos with others noses not covered. Putting cops at risk for covid19. Just follow the rules or we will never get out of thus quarantine.

If he is banning Jewish funerals but not Muslim funerals and you cannot tell if he is antisemitic you got problems.
Really. He us banning all funerals includung Catholic funerals too. All funerals must be 10 or under.
Bloomberg got city council to change rules to allow him 3rd term. But then they changed it back.
What is this obsession with jewish and Muslim funerals. We all want to mourn and bury our dead. Have had to do without in our own family during covid19. 10 people thats it.
Murphy has same problem with the Hasidim in Lakewood.
As a Yeshiva boy explained it to me, they believe God is the most important thing, and they are right, and God wants you to be healthy.
