LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The Diocese of Las Vegas said Friday that, despite President Trump’s deeming churches essential earlier in the day, it will follow the guidance of the Diocesan Restoration Council and keep churches closed.
Bishop of the diocese George Leo Thomas, Ph.D., said that he’s pleased that houses of worship are considered essential by the federal government, parishes will only reopen when the council deems it appropriate.
The council, which was established by the bishop, has met several times while the diocese remains on a discontinuance order until May 31. It is still working to set up protocols based on what health officials are recommending.
Bishop Thomas said, “I established the Council to ensure the safe and systematic reopening of our parishes in a manner that follows and respects the guidelines and limitations provided by health officials and the State of Nevada.”
The council is headed by the President of Bishop Gorman High School John Kilduff and consists of various medical, gaming, education, civic and logistics professionals as well as pastoral ministry.
“It is essential that we are mindful of necessary precautions and safety recommendations for the health and well-being of all of our people,” Bishop Thomas said.

I don’t know what a “Diocesan Restoration Council” is, but our diocese of Baker (Oregon) is having mass with rules. Went to first mass in a long time last week. Going again today.

President Trump did not order any church to open. Nor is he forcing any church to open. What he said is, if people want to go to church to worship, they should be free to do so, without being persecuted, harassed or terrorized by deranged, power drunk governors or their police.
Churches are vastly more “essential” than liquor stores and weed stores which these crazy blue state governors have kept open.

Sounds like a great opportunity for recruitment by Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), which would bug the heck out of the local diocese. I bet if they held a Latin mass a lot of unhappy Catholics would attend.
Yesterday our doofus Cardinal Dolan, opted to support Fredo’s brother over Trump. The Cardinal said he would support the politicians and epidemiologists in keeping the churches closed. This is no surprise, after all he has never put up a real fight against the politicians who support killing babies.He praises them and breaks bread with the Schumers, Cuomos, and Pelosis of this world.
I’m so angry with Bishop Thomas and our priests here in Las Vegas. For weeks I have watched pastors all over the country reject the orders of their governors and hold services in defiance of shutdowns. Yet I have not heard a single voice cry out for us Catholics.
Our Catholic leaders have rolled over and played dead while the faithful languish without the Body and Blood of Christ, the source and summit of our faith.
They have not been shut off from the Eucharist because they can celebrate Mass privately. I tried to watch Mass from my parish on Facebook but it is empty to me. There is something palpable when at Mass that doesn’t come across in a live feed.
I was also surprised to see a couple of parishioners who were allowed to attend. That made me think that many if not most of the priests are including insiders at their private Masses. I think Governor Sisolak is probably able to attend and that makes me all the angrier.
The financial hit will be felt for some time as most parishioners are not giving online during this shutdown. I have withheld my own donations in protest of their cowardly behavior.
I am praying hard that the Lord will remove this anger so that I can be ready to return when our human oppressors allow public Mass to begin. Supposedly the closure in Las Vegas diocese expires on May 31st.
