Growing up in Evangelical communities increases porn viewership in non-religious teenagers

New research has found a link between religious environments in the United States and porn-viewing among youth. The study, published in Deviant Behavior, strengthens the findings of existing research by using multilevel data to account for important differences between individuals.

Even after accounting for confounding variables, the researchers found that county-level religious adherence rates still increased the odds of watching porn during adolescence by 66.53%, regardless of religious identity. Similarly, youth were more likely to report viewing pornography in counties with a higher share of conservative Protestants, especially among youth who were not conservative Protestants themselves.

That last line is really important: Non-Protestant youth in highly Protestant communities are watching more pornography than similarly non-Protestant youth in less religious communities.

What a bizarre thing to study.

This is obviously a hit piece, and humorous considering it is probably written by those who see no harm in pornography and actually consider viewing it as healthy - the perverted left.

I’m not surprised as libtards ironically are becoming the new sexless puritans doing what the old puritans could never accomplish as the girls learn men are all icky rapists and they should becoming virgin spinster sjw womyn’s studies professors and the birth rate is plummeting.

The study also showed that Evangelical youth in highly Evangelical communities are watching more pornography than similarly religious youth in non-religious communities, but the effect of a religious community is more pronounced on the porn-viewing of non-religious teens than religious ones.

So ... the upshot is small, evangelical towns contribute to more teens watching porn, but non-religious teens in those towns are the ones watching the most.

Birth rates plummet in correlation with an increase of women graduating high school. This is seen in every country, regardless of religion or economic development.

It is kind of interesting how the left mixes authoritarianism with a kind of libertinism. And yet sometimes there is a sort of puritanism. I figure the left rewards libertinism to groups and individuals it considers Alpha and it has all kinds of restrictions on those it considers inferior. Thus, there are no rules for gay males but a heterosexual man must practically fill out a form before he can so much as hold hands with his girlfriend. But if things go far then the girlfriend practically must have an abortion and this “choice” will be celebrated. Thus also, MeToo usually means everything but the left’s Alpha male, Bill Clinton, is not held up to the MeToo standard. His misconduct is virtually celebrated and his female victims are condemned and insulted.

That last line is really important: Non-Protestant youth in highly Protestant communities are watching more pornography than similarly non-Protestant youth in less religious communities.

Meaning that somehow conservative Protestants are to be blamed for non-Protestant youth watching porn which is produced by liberals and atheists.

Just what the researchers use to determine what is "evangelical" is not said. Also, most likely does not take into account the fact that other negative societal aspects also typically are higher in evangelical areas, from low-income to higher crime, but are not caused by evangelicalism, as instead that is the culture in which people see there spiritual need more than affluent suburbs. Likewise a study of the 1st century church could find that slavery predominated more among Christians since slaves were more open to the gospel, rather than Christianity fostering slavery.

I suspect that the findings of the study were determined by its intent:

“My speculation is that it might be due to the pressure from conservative Protestant culture which forbids or even shames overt sexual expression. Under such a religious cultural context, youth may have no other option but to seek out sexual opportunities, including porn viewing, covertly.”

Likely the researcher advocates "safe-sex" fornication, abortion, sodomy, etc. in action.

When I think of Evangelical Protestant communities I think of middle income to rich folks. Where lots of kids have several devices to access with the internet. Some kid might get counted as three people between his phone, tablet and computer.

They looked at county-level data and looked at how people self-reported their religious affiliation.

Counties with higher proportions of self-reported evangelicals saw higher proportions of porn viewership among all teens, though the largest difference in groups was comparing non-religious teens in highly evangelical counties to non-religious teens in less evangelical communities.

Personally, I have a suspicion it has something to do with an urban/rural divide and there being less to do in rural communities.

I’m skeptical of any poll any longer and take them worth a grain of salt. Like someone posted, this is an odd thing to study. People have too many agendas to make polls meaningful.

Could it be that Christian youth stay away from porn when they know so many contemporaries around them are watching porn?

In other words, the effect is the opposite of what is stated?

Good points. Reminded me of this superb essay I read years ago:

Whether by intention or outcome, Liberals tend to champion only freedoms that enslave and/or destabilize: e.g., sexual rights, drug use rights, children's rights to be free of parental control, procedure rights for criminals (at the expense of victims and society), free speech rights for communists and jihadists (but not for pro-lifers, or conservative students on campus).

Once the person, a social animal, is shorn from the familial, ecclesial and other communities that give him context, reference and support; once he is taught to demand his abstract individual rights in splendid isolation from others; once he is schooled to nurture grievance and a sense of entitlement; once his moral conscience is replaced with a social one; he will decline into dependence as surely as night follows day.

The State will be waiting to care for him and minister to his needs--at the cost of his resources, his soul, and increasingly of his intelligence. As David Mamet writes, the Left cannot honestly evaluate the results of its actions.
