To this we may add another vision, which the venerable sister Joanna of Jesus and Mary, also a Franciscan nun, had. She was one day meditating on the Infant Jesus persecuted by Herod, when she heard a great noise, as of armed men pursuing some one; and immediately she saw before her a most beautiful child, who, all out of breath and running, exclaimed: ' O my Joanna, help Me, conceal Me! I am Jesus of Nazareth; I am flying from sinners, who wish to kill Me, and persecute Me as Herod did. Do thou save Me.' ...

With all of the horrors of the sins of priests and bishops -- with the sadness of the persecuted Church throughout the world -- with the standoff at the Church of the Nativity, I couldn't help but think of this tonight. Fortunately, I had the book handy and thought the two sisters visions commended by St. Alphonsus Liguori were worthy of our contemplation to further motivate our prayers.

Thank you for posting this. I have an recurring thought of the real Church being called into the desert figuratively to protect the Faith like St. Anthony in the early Church. Another thought is one of possibly being an underground Church in some places. The imagery of your post brings tears. Perhaps we here are on a parallel flight to egypt with the Holy Family.

Your post made me reflect why I am so saddened, but stil need to respect the Church. Just as you have singled out our spiritual mothers, we must praise the men of God who have led us.

I am a young daughter of a man who was also treated poorly by the Church for having to leave his wife and raise his children. There is a lesson in what you have spoken.

I was just talking to a friend tonight at dinner and we think that God is calling us all to greater holiness. This is definately a wake up call for all Catholics. We want our priests to be wonderful men of God but we have to do our part too. And constant prayer is a MAJOR part of that. Thank goodness we don't have to pray alone.

Yes, the Universal Call to Holiness! It is like Father Elijah said in his post "Shall We Gather at the River" -- the cleansing of the Church must begin with each one of us, and we need to take advantage of all means to grow in holiness and to intercede for the Pope, the clergy, the laity, and our common witness to Jesus Christ who through the greatest Mercy remains with us truly present in the Holy Eucharist and in all the Tabernacles throughout the world.
