LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cardinal Roger Mahony, who leads the nation's largest Catholic diocese, was in good condition Monday after being hospitalized for treatment of a blood clot in his lung, church officials said.
Mahony, 66, was admitted Sunday night to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, the archdiocese said in a statement. He is expected to remain hospitalized for several days.
Mahony returned last week from a two-day Vatican summit where he met with the pope and other U.S. cardinals to discuss the sex abuse scandal that has rocked the Roman Catholic church.
Since returning, he has maintained a busy schedule.
In recent days, he has granted several interviews with the media, saying the church must have a zero-tolerance policy toward sexually abusive priests and apologizing to victims.
But he has been criticized for refusing to make public the names of priests who were removed for alleged misconduct.
Mahony was treated in 1998 for a blood clot in his right lung that he developed after prostate surgery. Clots are a common occurrence following surgery. A Hollywood native and former bishop of Stockton, Mahony succeeded Cardinal Timothy Manning as archbishop of Los Angeles on Sept. 5, 1985. He was made cardinal in 1991.
Today is the Feast of St. Catherine of SIena, Doctor of the Church.

Try and take it with a grain of salt. Like I said, those of us in the ghetto -- who get to see and understand first -- are being done a favor. Who wants bliss at the price of ignorance? I rather like knowing where we stand.
I just wish FR weren't quite so militant about "sending a message". After all, the AP's got it sandwiched between Bush and his bid for socialized mental healthcare and some UN story. What do they know that the lunkheads at the AP don't know? =)

All of us are human and sometimes need a wake-up call. Hey, I know I got one when I realized my Church was under attack - maybe this is Cardinal Mahony's turn. That said, I pray he recovers fully.
