Candidate Says "The Constitution is just a piece of paper."

Roger Roth, Wisconsin Assemblyman and Candidate for Congress, Wisconsin’s 8th District, had this observation about the U.S. Constitution:

“The Constitution is a wonderful document. It’s a great piece of paper that’s got a lot of words on it. But you know, at the end of the day, it’s just a piece of paper that’s got a lot of words on it. And we need to elect representatives that believe in that.”

“It’s not so much ... I asked a class of, of, uh, you know, I go around to my local schools and talk to fourth, fifth, sixth graders, and I ask them, “what makes America great?” And they said, “Oh, we have a Constitution. It’s a flexible document” And I said, “Okay, yeah, that’s true.”

You know what’s most amazing about this? The candidate who said it is a Republican!

I don’t know anything about this Roth fellow, but I’m calling “shenanigans” on this. This video appears to be edited to place what Roth said out of context.

When Roth said that the Constitution is just a piece of paper with lots of words in it and you need to have the right people in Congress and in the courts, he appeared to be about to explain that we needed people loyal to the Constitution, but the guy who edited the video cut him off right before he could explain what he meant.

And whenRoth asked kids why our system of government was so great, and they replied that it was because our Constitution was flexible, Roth started saying “yes, that’s true, but . . .” and he was cut off, in mid sentence, before he explained that our Constitution gives us flexibility for some things (such as what is a “reasonable” search and what is “cruel and unusual punishment” but not for other things.

I think that the video was butchered by a hack editor with an agenda. I seriously doubt that it reveals Mr. Roth’s views.

Or, quite likely, they edited the video in order to take him out of context.

Good Lord. We ARE doomed! Most days I still hold out a little hope, but not today!

There are far too many who look at the constitution this way in the GOP. When you see that those who identify themselves as members of the “political class” largely fell this way you understand why over 90% of them voted for Barack Obama. This is why we need to be very careful we have a lot of Republiscum clingons running as if they are Tea Party candidates when they are just power hungry defilers of liberty. Why do you think Mitt Romney isn’t more vocal in his support of the Tea Party? He thinks we are nuts and isn’t interested in the kind of restraints envisioned by the founders when they created the constition.

I’d like to see the full unedited version.

This is an out of context smear. People in this thread are just reading the headline.

BTW CROWDED primary for this seat to take on sophomore rat Steve Kagen. Anybody have a preference?

I wonder, as well, whether it's out of context.

For example, he could have been pointing out that without elected representatives who believe in the Constitution, it's just a piece of paper that can be and has been ignored.

And when he says the Constitution is flexible, of course it is, it has been amended many times through the proper process. Now, it's also been treated as flexible through willful misinterpretation, which is quite another thing entirely.

The video was blatantly edited to make Roth look bad (see my post #83). If anything, I would bet that he believes the opposite of what was presented in the butchered video.
