The University of Missouri-Columbia is expecting at least a 14-percent decline in incoming freshmen this fall, resulting in its smallest class in nearly two decades.
Administrators project that about 4,000 freshmen will enroll in August. Thats down by about 700 students from 2016 and significantly lower than in 2015, when more than 6,000 enrolled.
The shrinking numbers have been tied at least partly to the protests on campus in 2015 that followed reports of racism on and near campus.
The school issued a news release Friday afternoon that mentions the enrollment decline only indirectly.
A class of this size gives us the ability to think carefully about our long-term enrollment planning, said Garnett Stokes, interim chancellor, in a prepared statement.
As part of our planning process, we will be determining the optimum freshman class size for Fall 2018 and future years. This will help us develop and create strong and renewable resources, targeting our students best interests as we educate the future leaders of our state and nation.
The news release focuses on the universitys success in retaining students, with 94 percent re-enrolling. The school also said it is maintaining high academic quality, with incoming freshmen posting an average ACT score of 25.5.
Last week, curators of the University of Missouri four-campus system were alerted to a $9 million expected decline in tuition revenue at Mizzou. At the time, enrollment estimates were not available.

Those that aren’t familiar: the president of the school was fired for being white basically. A black school leader said he saw a noose, KKK driving on campus, and a bunch of fake hate crimes.
The football team threatened to go on strike.
So they fired the school president who didn’t cave into the black demands.
But it set a precedent. Blacks via the football team can hold any American college hostage to their demands.
Mr.RR and I are both Mizzou grads. When we attended it was an ultra conservative campus. Sad to watch its decline.
At some point, the argument will become “the declining enrollment figures prove we haven’t been radical enough!” Kind of like Venezuela.
Further bulletin for the admin dumbasses at Mizzou -- those hillbillies you so loftily dismiss are way smarter than you when determining the BS quotient of your institution.
What is their acceptance rate? Enrollment rate of those accepted?
Renewablility is not Sustaneability.
UM is a cesspool. Nothing more.
What’s wrong, not enough safe spaces and puppy cuddling rooms?
Another 14% on top of last year’s 30%?
Mizzou - where whites are lynched
Yet the legislatures of so-called conservative states have done nothing to rein in the madness. I swear to God that the Republican Party is nothing more then Democrat leftist with different branding/talking points in cahoots with the globalists to play both ends against the middle class.
The third American Revolution is going to be bloody.
And the fifteen percent increase in tuition will be justified by the drop in admissions.
Did these multi-degree 'educators' lack such an ability before they got the bad news about freshmen staying away from their little PC playpen?
the melissa click episode was apparently a symptom of a much larger problem at that institution.
“tied at least partly to the protests on campus in 2015 that followed reports of racism on and near campus.” They still don’t get it or refuse to admit it. The problem was the university caving in to the radical black anarchists and middle class whites refusing to send their children and money to a school that did that sort of thing. The deification of Michael Sams and his homosexuality did not help so the university continues in a steep decline of their own making. Too bad.
Good luck getting students to attend if you only cater to BLM folks!
I doubt they have the money or need to attend such a pathetic institution.
At some point, the argument will become the declining enrollment figures prove we havent been radical enough! Kind of like Venezuela.
That was EXACTLY what Democrats said after Hillary lost - she wasn’t far enough left.
The football team didn’t go on strike but they sure played like they were. They went from major contenders in the SEC to a team that looks like they’re desperately trying to hold onto last place.
