We all complain, and with justice, about the falseness of much that is said in Washington, and the cowardice that leaves a great deal unsaid. But I found myself impressed and grateful for the words of Chuck Hagel, the Republican senator from Nebraska, in a meeting of the Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday. Because his message was not one Republicans or Democrats would find congenial, it may be accidentally dropped down the memory hole, so I'll quote at some length.
The committee was nearing a vote on what was, essentially, an announcement of no confidence in the administration's leadership in Iraq. Specifically it was a nonbinding resolution opposing the increase in troops the president has requested. This was not significant in a concrete way: The president has the power to send more troops, and they are already arriving. But as symbols go, it packed a punch. You couldn't watch it on television or on the Internet and not see that Mr. Hagel was letting it rip. He did not speak from notes or a text but while looking at his fellow senators. There seemed no time lag between thought and word. He was barreling, he was giving it to you straight, and he'd pick up the pieces later.
This is what he said: Congress has duties; in the case of the war, meeting those duties was not convenient; Congress did not meet them.

She's been a blathering Dingbat for the last several years. Must be the Prozac.
Talk about phoning it in. 60% of her column is a direct quote from Hagel's speech.
And just where the hell was Chuck and the rest of Congress when we were sent packing in Mogadishu? When the USS Cole was bombed? When our embassies were blown up? And finally where was the courage to declare war on bin Laden and Al Qaeda when they made it official and declared war on us in 1998?
Im on Prozac and it hasnt made me cut and run
She must be dating Bill Clinton!!
I've seen so many good articles by Peggy Noonan. Is she changing?
Sad Sack Hagel....what a PATHETIC bag of SKIN.
I thought she did that a couple articles ago, when she put down President Bush's policy change in Iraq, wondering why did he ignore the salvation offered by the ISG? I have considered Peggy Noonan a wonderful writer for years, but her thinking on Iraq has become very skewed.
She appears to have made a slight left turn in the last year. No idea why.
I don't read anything that Peggy Noonan writes anymore. She has had her nowe in a snit ever since Bush turned down her offer to write his speeches for the 2004 election. Can you even imagine Bush talking in the wordy, flowery style of Peggy Noonan? He would have been a bigger joke than Al Gore in his brown suits. Peggy may as well move over to the left if she thinks that Granny knows best.
Maybe its her mixing it with 3 or 4 RobRoys??
Whatever useful thoughts or comments Peggy once could write disappeared. Irrevocably, her insight left her. Is it devil rum, the Irish disease, writer's block, or some other affliction? I do not know. What cannot be denied is that Chuck Hagel is an empty vessel unworthy of anything beyond passing interest or consideration of how he's vainly going to try to hurt the US and help our enemies while posing as the ultimate Vietnam Veteran. He's Michael Moore lite from a tactical standpoint, but his waist is smaller and on the surface he's less repulsive.
ooops. 16 was for you.
Peggy was getting wet listening to the silver haired Nebraskan...
yea, I suspect Gin
