[This is from the International Edition of SCMP]

China has won the bid to co-produce a multibillion ($3Billion) long-range air and missile defence system in Turkey, in what is its largest and most advanced arms sales to a NATO country.

The Turkish defence minister announced the decision to approve the US$3 billion bid by China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp, rejecting rival offers from Russian, US and European firms.

The winning Chinese FD-2000 system beat the Patriot, the Russian S-400 and the French-Italian Eurosam Samp-T, it was announced on Thursday.

Turkey's President Reccep Erdogan has been moving closer to other Muslim dominated nations in the Near East. He has established a policy of 'Islam only', that there is no religion called 'Sunni' or 'Shia'. He is moving towards creating a closer working relationship with the '-stans', which are all ethnically Turks, and with Muslim enclaves in Eastern Europe.

Will he just install them, or share teardown and tech info with his NATO allies? /S

There is nothing humorous in this situation. This missile system is referred to as defensive, but they are long-range missiles, and NATO vs. Turkey or Russia vs. Turkey could be arriving sooner than anyone would like to see.

By the way, nice cabinet.

I suspect he will break with NATO. Turkey is no longer a secular Near Eastern nation, but rapidly returning to an Islamic enclave with pretensions of a reborn Ottoman Empire.

Yeah, I know, there was a China cabinet thread earlier today.

I don’t know why anyone would ever sell advanced weaponry to a muslim country. It’s like walking into Hannibal Lecter’s cell unprotected.

Yeah, that’s my opinion, but when Erdogan and Obama get together they chat for hours in Arabic. Those Muslim guys are close, and Europe has never trusted Turkey because of its past. Turkey did overrun a large portion of Europe and carry off captives for slaves.

Turkey, I believe, is part of NATO because the U.S. wanted them as members. It had a northern shoreline that was perfect for spying on the USSR.

What I am seeing now is Russia’s occupation of Crimea being a perfect launchpad for nukes against a rising Muslim Near East.

“What I am seeing now is Russia’s occupation of Crimea being a perfect launchpad for nukes against a rising Muslim Near East.”

If that’s true, then I don’t understand why Turkey would want to leave NATO or provoke NATO into expelling it.

Communists can have missile defense, Islamists can have missile defense, but we must not let teh USA have it. Or our allies. No, sir!

Once upon a time, Turkey feared Russia and joined the US and other Middle Eastern countries in the Middle East Treaty Organization which also included Iran and Iraq.

It was disbanded as a organization after 1979 upon the overthrow of the Shah in Iran

Yep, you read Shoebat so you know Turkey is building a Caliphate. And they learned that allying with Germans and Western Europe got the Ottomans beat. Unlike America the Turks have learned from histories mistakes. This will end badly for the planet so I tell everyone i know. Get yourself right with God because this is going to be a bumpy few years.

Offensive “defense” missiles? Maybe Turkey will eventually launch them at Russia.

Buying the Israeli systems isn't an option, due to domestic politics and due to the fact that the Israelis would never consider selling those systems to Turkey (or maybe to anyone). The Turks wouldn't choose a Russian system, since any such system would be shooting down Russian missiles at some point. They eschewed the US-built Patriot missile system and the European system, choosing a probably cheaper Chinese system, imagine that.
