Donald Trump is on the rise — and that’s very bad news for the GOP
The Washington Post ^ | July 1st, 2015 | By Paul Waldman

Posted on 07/01/2015 4:19:50 PM PDT by Mariner

Donald Trump is surging. In a field that has grown to 16 Republican presidential candidates (once Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Ohio Gov. John Kasich make their candidacies official), Trump is now in second place pretty much wherever you look. A new Quinnipiac poll of Iowa voters shows him tied for second with Ben Carson; they each have 10 percent to Walker’s 18. The latest CNN/WMUR poll in New Hampshire also puts Trump in second, with 11 percent, behind only Jeb Bush at 16 percent. And in the Huffington Post Pollster average of national polls, Trump comes in a mere 0.7 percent behind Bush.

While everyone has treated the Trump story as an amusing sideshow to the campaign (which it certainly is), there’s a genuine danger for the GOP in his presence that goes beyond the simple fact that he makes the party look silly (which he certainly does). More than any other candidate, Trump is telling Latinos that the Republican Party doesn’t like them.

Now let’s be clear: It isn’t as though Trump is going to be a serious contender for the nomination. But he could also go significantly higher than he is now. Just think about what happened in 2012, when one ridiculous candidate after another shot to the front of the Republican primary race. At one point, Rick Perry was in the lead with 32 percent support. Herman Cain once led with 26 percent. Newt Gingrich topped the field with 35 percent. Rick Santorum was No. 1 with 34 percent. The 2016 race may or may not be that volatile, but it will certainly have some ups and downs, as one candidate or another will stumble and another will rise.

1. The author's sentiments are not unlike many on FR.

2. The left sure spends a LOT of ink on a guy that can't win, and is sure to destroy the Republican Party for a generation:)

I don't think there is anything to worry about.

People are happy to hear what he's saying, but when push comes to shove he's not really interested in running for president. I think most folks can sense that.

HEY, the Republican party has been screwed up for generation already. Trump is the man to shake the country club crap-heads off their throne.

I disagree entirely.

Trump is a early on flash in the pan due largely to the fact that he is saying and doing what most politicians only wish they could do and say and still win a election.

But they can’t, and Trump will remain a potent interest, but he won’t be making it to the dance.

Once again, the Washington Post is all concerned about a threat the Republican Party.

Paul Waldman makes Donald Kaul, David Corn and Richard Cohen look like Birchers.

Go to Donald Trump’s Facebook page: there are Hispanics messaging Trump about how proud they are of him, and how they intend on voting for him. Not all Americans are welcoming towards criminal aliens invading our nation.

The only people who are disliking Donald are illegal alien criminals and their supporters. Oh, yeah, and the few people here on FR who are RINO trolls.

Sure they spend a lot of ink on him- they want to promote him to the hilt. Temporary bump - he’s no more conservative than Stephen Colbert.

Actually, it is Paul Waldman making that claim. The difference between Trump and the GOP is that Trump is against illegal immigration, while many of the GOP candidates are in favor of it (don't pay attention to what they say, watch what they do).

He's the Paris Hilton of the Republican Party.

This is the great hope of the liberals, that the GOP nominates Trump and America elects the pathetic Hillary in order to reject the ridiculous Trump.

One has to reach pretty far left to even get a hint of how commie David Corn is.

Waldman to the left of him, or same?

Why is enforcing laws and securing the border a racial thing? Just say that you are going to enforce the law vigorously. If they make racial then it is on them not you Trump.
