Uber is temporarily halting self-driving car tests in all locations after a deadly accident.

Programs in San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Phoenix and Toronto will be paused after a woman was hit and killed overnight by an Uber self-driving car when walking across the street in Tempe, Arizona. It is likely the first pedestrian fatality caused by a self-driving car.

Car 1, Human 0

Ban cars? Ban driverless cars? They have no constitutional rights, correct? Who has liability? Why did the car kill the human?!

That will put a sock in the mouths of the idiot hipsters that promoted self-driving cares because human drives were all supposedly a bunch of idiots that couldn’t be trusted with private auto ownership.

I still say one of the (largely) missed aspects of all of this is Insurance.

If I don’t design the car and I don’t drive the car — if the car has neither steering wheel nor brake pedals — then I don’t have to buy auto insurance. General Motors has to buy auto insurance. For millions of cars. And when accidents happen, the car company will be 100% to blame. Deep pockets. Lawyers will clean up on that.

As you mentioned jay-walking, I did a quick search. Tempe police says "the woman was walking outside of the crosswalk overnight near Mill Avenue and Curry Road when she was struck by a self-driving Uber". Does this mean she was walking along the road or crossing the road. A bit ambiguous.

Say there was an operator behind the wheel. Will they get the blame?

There was another one not to long ago...crashed into a truck?

Driverless cars are stupid. I don't want to look over and see one beside me. It's insane? Take a damn bus.

Agreed. I kept hearing how flawless they were. What’s the fatality rate based on number of driverless cars in USA compared to cars driven by humans?

1 in 50 vs 1 in 5000?

UBER and all others need to be fully liable for all accidents of any kind with any of this driverless initiative.

My bet is that the car followed the traffic laws and this woman was jay walking or walking against the light.

WHY the huge push for driver less cars? Can someone explain this to me?
They can shove up their rear end! I’d never have one!

Pedestrian or bicyclist?

The Verge reports: "The crash occurred near Mill Avenue and Curry Road early Monday morning in Tempe, Arizona, the channel reports. The Uber vehicle was reportedly headed northbound when a woman walking outside of the crosswalk was struck. The woman was taken to the hospital where she later died from her injuries. Early reports suggested that she may have been a bicyclist, but that may not be the case."
