President Trump’s extravagant, $3,000, 300-sandwich celebration of Clemson University
The Washington Post ^ | January 15, 2019 | Philip Bump

Posted on 01/15/2019 4:11:30 PM PST by Trump20162020

Trump says they bought "1,000 burgers" for Clemson. "It was piled up a mile high," he said.

FACT CHECK: At two inches each, a thousand burgers would not reach one mile high.

You know it is possible the piece was written a bit tongue in cheek.

Just tossing it out there.

The term “extravagant” in the headline might be a clue.

Trump didn't literally mean a mile high. He said it with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek.

That what's wrong with liberals today.

They can't take a frickin' joke.

The WaPo piece is itself written tongue in cheek. The writer knows Trump didn’t literally mean it was a mile high. The writer was making a joke.

This kind of thing is why JimRob makes people put satire warnings on posts.

WaPo also formed a fact-checking team (a doctor, a butcher and a mathematician to check Trump's claim: "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse".

"The team determined that the volume of chewed horse meat from an average horse far exceeds the volume of an average man's stomach (even Trump's). There is no way he could consume a whole horse.

We therefore score this claim as FALSE. "

This is what is considered “News” from the Jeff Bezos who sends photos of his winky to his mistress, Washington Compost

...which is 2 inches high. Just like a Big Mac.

".... The WaPo piece is itself written tongue in cheek. The writer knows Trump didn’t literally mean it was a mile high. The writer was making a joke....."

If this is true, where is your proof of this? From your comments it sounds like the WaPo author writing this tongue-in-cheek himself is just your guess or speculation. "....You know it is possible the piece was written a bit tongue in cheek. Just tossing it out there...."

I read the Washington Compost article and it is described as a "political analysis". I see no indication that this was a satirical or tongue-in-cheek article, given their history of almost constant negative reporting on Trump. After all, Philip Bump is not known for his satire.

All I read was an attempt to nitpick the president's efforts and statements on the fast food lunch in the WH.

None of the comments below the article gave any indication that anybody else reading and commenting thought it was tongue-in-cheek either.

I also read all of comments on this FR thread and you seem to be the only one who thinks that it is satire.

So where do you get this idea that the author, Philip Bump, was being satirical, if no one else does? Conjecture on your part? Or am I and the rest of the FReepers missing something?

President Trump said he paid for it with his own personal money.

Excellent.

The artist James Whistler was once rallied by a critic who observed that his famous painting “Symphony in White,” contained other colors besides white. Whistler replied, “Can anything be more amazing than the stultified prattle of this poor person? . . . Good God, did this ass . . . in his astounding wisdom believe that a Symphony in F contains no other note but . . . a continued repetition of F F F? Fool!”

Freepers are more than capable of not getting the joke. That’s why JimRob had to start putting satire alerts on certain posts. Because you’d have these embarrassing threads full of people yelling at a piece that was obviously written in jest.

I’m not sure exactly how to *prove* that something is a joke, but here is some evidence: writer Matt Vespa at Townhall concluded that the WaPo piece was a joke. He did struggle with it but finally came to the right conclusion.

Yeah, I got the satire tag thing. You've mentioned it twice now. Problem is that there was not satire tag on this post so it was open for interpretation.

So it still looks like conjecture then that this was satire. Like you said, even Matt Vespa struggled with it. He was not even sure. Even you said "possibly".

Like I said earlier, I read all of the comments on the thread, and you are the only one I could find that was swimming upstream on this.

Unless Bump comes out and says he was having some fun with the president, which he has no history of doing....he's a harsh critic of Trump, I will believe that it is a typical Washington Compost hate-Trump piece.

I could be wrong but then I would be in good company. All of the other FReepers that commented and the negative comments attached the WP article itself all assumed it was a hit piece and not a satire.
