WASHINGTON (AP) — Doris Cochran, a disabled mother of two young boys, is stockpiling canned foods these days, filling her shelves with noodle soup, green beans, peaches and pears — anything that can last for months or even years. Her pantry looks as though she’s preparing for a winter storm. But she’s just trying to make sure her family won’t go hungry if her food stamps run out.

For those like Cochran who rely on federal aid programs, the social safety net no longer feels so safe.

“I’m old enough to remember when being on food stamps was a bad thing.”

It’s only a bad thing if you’re able bodied and they should not be given stamps.

For the disabled, it is the only option in a civilized society. Yes, many people do fake it but the legiminately disabled should not suffer because of them.

Umm, not penny ONE exists *ANY* ‘federal’ coffers that wasn’t STOLEN from its rightful owner

Yes, STOLEN, since nothing is being ‘paid for’ (via taxes), instead handed over to another in the guise of ‘charity’ in direct violation of 5th, 9th, 10th & 13th A.

It’s not a safety net, it’s a safety web.

No it isn’t.
There was a time religious institutions took care of the poor, and they did it just as well.

The purpose of government involvement in charity is to buy votes and curry favor.

“This is a potentially catastrophic situation,” Calvert said. “This could be an immediate emergency that grows exponentially.”

Or not.

What is your solution for the disabled if those institutions cannot support them and too few people donate?

Gas chambers? Execution vans? I suppose those are too much government as well. Just let the disabled suffer and die in the street. Then let the free market sort out what to do with their diseased bodies...

Somebody said the EBT cards run out in March. Any truth to that? Then I’ll start feeling sorry for a few folks.

She lives in subsidized housing in Arlington, Virginia, with her 6- and 8-year-old sons. She used to drive a truck, but recent health issues have left her unable to work. She relies solely on government subsidies to survive, cobbling together just enough to support her children using social security payments, food stamps and cash assistance payments. If any one of those federal programs were to stall, Cochran could end up on the street.

She lives in one of the most expensive counties in the entire USA. Subsidized by the taxpayer. There are a lot of cheaper places to live in VA.
