"If You Weren't Worried Before, Worry Now" (Mexican Tariffs)
Stock Talk Journal ^ | 5-31-2019 | Rabobank’s Michael Every

It hasn’t been China that has been the source of sudden escalation; nor Iran; nor North Korea; nor Turkey, who admittedly gave it a good go in announcing they may install Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missiles in the area of the Mediterranean they are looking for energy in despite protests from the EU’s Cyprus it’s their naval territory; nor even Italy, where Deputy PM Salvini is threatening new elections that would very likely strengthen his hand further has he prepares for battle with Brussels. No, it was Mexico. (Or rather US President Trump, which is less of a surprise.)

Don’t get me wrong. Up until this morning I was going to say that it was China you should worry about the most as the May manufacturing PMI slumped to 49.4, and because June was already looking ugly for CNY (as Bloomberg notes today). Moreover, if you listen to recent statements from the White House, and read tweets from a few key US market participants, you could make a strong argument there will soon be US sanctions placed on China over its alleged concentration camps in Xinjiang. (Which readers who have spoken to me personally may recall I have long been suggesting would be a logical–and powerfully disruptive–‘moral’ weapon for the US to use next.) Yet today we are worried most about Mexico because Trump has just tweeted:

“On June 10th, the United States will impose a 5% Tariff on all goods coming into our Country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP. The Tariff will gradually increase until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied

Aren’t they already begging for an ‘emergency meeting’?

The Globalists are going all out in their war on Trump’s well-designed tariffs. Methinks they are fearful Trump will be VERY successful and destroy one of their main foundations of their Globalist ideology.

Let the Globalists tremble before our President Trump.

5% is nothing.

Close the Southern Border (Air-tight) for at least 5 years.

Nothing comes in. Nothing.

Illegals rot in Mexico, or go home and fix your own Country.

Sure, the Mexicans will do the big public emergency meeting with the US and cry uncle.

It’s the secret meetings that the Mexico will have with China and Russia that I worry about.

And then President Trump will use the tariff money collected, estimated at $18 Billion, to build his wall to control immigration....thus fulfilling his prophecy that Mexico will pay for the Trump Wall...so perfect a plan that it makes you weep.

The Chamber of Commerce is threatening to take Trump to court over Mexican tariffs. Crazy times.

Trump should do a 10 minute report before the cameras, explaining why/who is preventing fixing the border. it’s high on the list of things to fix.. and he’s talked about it.. he tweets about it... but nothing like doing a line by line explanation... short and to the point.

The dems are keeping all the fixes from being fixed...
The law has to be changed that illegals use to come here.. change it in a minute and that stops that kind of traffic..
there are 2-3 laws that has to be changed and it will stop the majority of illegals entering.

Just tell the people why they are allowed in and who is letting it happen.. and who can change it.
there are those out here who think Trump isn’t doing enough and laws are not explained.. not everyone tweets or read tweets.

Maybe the house could have been saved if all the people knew this was not a time to think “to have it more balanced” and voted in more dems. It was a disaster!

Trump just tossed a fake grenade into a roomful of sleeping banditos - now they're suddenly awake and paying attention.

Close the border, amigos, or the next one es genuino.

Correct. Does the writer want us to say "yum, yum" to the Adam Schitt sandwich of illegal immigrants and so-called refugees (economic illegals) that have been pouring over our border these past few years?

Get a grip, writer. It already IS a humanitarian and national crisis.

Apply 5% tariff.
Review Mexico’s plan(s) to halt illegal crossings.
Quantify drastic reduction in illegal crossings for several months.
Only then pull the tariff.
If illegal crossings thereafter increase by more than x%, there’s a 10% tariff for 6 months, and crossings must decrease.
Rinse and repeat with 15% next time.

Give bounties for identifying illegals and employers of illegals.
Deport all illegals.
Fine the crap out of those law-breaking employers.

The commentators are really really wishing for a stock market crash! they want it so bad they will gladly talk doom and gloom, just hoping that the DOW goes down 400 points and the headlines say “World is ending, DOW plunges.”

The hysteria over the proposed Mexican tariffs would be funny if it wasn’t so predictable. Mexico will quickly respond with tighter restrictions on illegal immigration and this will all go away with no impact.

But I keep wondering why the left is so opposed to what Trump is doing? The tariffs are taxes aren’t they? The left loves raising taxes since it brings more money into the government. What’s their problem with this policy? Also, the tariffs will slow global growth which will reduce green house gasses and save the planet. Why aren’t the greens applauding Trump for saving the planet? Shouldn’t stock investors ask their company CEOs why they they moved production into countries whose governments were thin patinas on organized criminal cartels like China and Mexico? Maybe that wasn’t such a good long term strategy from a risk/reward standpoint. Trump is making America great again not the NYSE. He wasn’t elected President of the Chamber of Commerce but POTUS.

This is normal for the Chamber of Commerce. They want a steady (or, better yet, increasing) stream of cheap labor.
