Rand Paul signals support for Red Flags
Yahoo news ^ | 8/13/2019 | AP

Paul, a strong gun-rights advocate, signaled his willingness to support something along the lines of "red flag" laws that allow guns to be removed from those who may be a danger to themselves and others.

"I'm not opposed to sort of an emergency order for 48 hours and then you get a hearing in a court where you get the full due-process protections," he said in the interview. "It's the one thing that could fix a lot of stuff. I think most of these homicidal attackers ... are sending off signals to their family and community."

“harmless and competent”

That’s the problem. Define ‘harmless’.

“He’s a Republican...Jail him! He’s an obvious menace to society.”

“He’s doesn’t believe in global warming...Jail him! He’s an obvious menace to society.”

These are pre-crimes: We declare him to be a potential criminal, so make him do what we want!

Most states already HAVE this sort of thing in place.

I know a lady whose husband was involuntarily committed after threatening to harm himself.

As a result he lost his job in a gun factory as after that he was not permitted to have them or be around them.

He did have due process. In the end the courts decided to retain his ban.

Yeah. I had to give up my SKS for the duration of my divorce proceedings. Well, I didn’t have to. I volunteered to give the gun to a mutual friend until the thing was over.

That is actually a safe call - for everyone concerned.

[[Two or more witnesses is a good rule and comes right out of the bible.]]

Sorry- but when a spouse is turned in by their ex- the family will run to the defense of the left and innocent people will become felons-

Findign 2 people to testify against someone isn’t too difficult-

[[And to be clear, I think the standard would still need to be very high.]]

Again- the left don’t even respect our constitution- they sure as heck aint gonna respect any standard- especially once they get in power again-

[[No one should ever have to prove they are harmless and competent to own a gun,]]

Exactly- this is exactly what red flag laws do- force people to prove they are innocent simply for owning a gun and for having someone who dislikes them turn them in falsely-

This isn’t how our judicial system is supposed to work-

Ps

When someone threatens someone they way you describe they can be arrested. They don’t disarm them and leave.

“One good one would be two or more witnesses testifying that you have made actionable threats, on or off line.”

Define ‘actionable’.

Either a crime has been committed or it hasn’t. Anything else is ‘pre-crime’.

Rand Paul would have been red-flagged by his insane neighbor in a heartbeat.

and that’s precisely the point- the left are going to be turning people in left and right- that is their backdoor to gun confiscation- no amount of ‘protections’ are going to protect the innocent gun owner when they are brought before liberal judges- people will go bankrupt left and right trying to futily prove they are innocent

“Most states already HAVE this sort of thing in place.”

Not really.

These Red Flag laws are much, much weaker and some do not allow the accused to be in court. It is done in secret. Colorado’s law is that way. You will never know until the SWAT teams knocks your door down.

At the end of the day, I think it’s one of those things that will have zero impact on most people. And the ones it does impact it will almost certainly need to impact.

No law is perfect, though.

My main problem is that I strongly believe in the phrase, “the less virtuous a people, the greater its need for laws.” And when it comes to guns, our culture is much less virtuous than it was in the past. And red flag laws don’t affect ALL of us the way those various bans do. They only affect individuals because of personal conduct (or they are framed).

In fact, it would let all the steam out of the gun control lobby. It would allow us all to have the guns we want to have with the large magazines etc. We could even own “scary looking” guns. All because we would all have the right to report any nut case with guns.

But like I said in an earlier post. There would have to be consequences associated with knowingly red flagging a person that a reasonable person would not red-flag.

Red Flag laws are the window dressing for the kinds of actions that put Salem, MA in the history books.

I like Rand even though I disagree with him on a few things.

This is something that could make me hate him.

I hope this is just the pain medication talking and he wises up quick.

The only option that works effectively is constitutional carry.

You can’t stop the existence of bad people. You can only help ensure that the good ones can defend themselves.

How exactly were all these mass shooters stopped again?

The guy that walked into the Missouri Walmart with a rifle slung was met at the door by whom?

That’s the “solution” my friend.

I’m not even crazy and I already have my red-flag stash. You take the ones with paperwork and I’ll be back in 20 minutes with the other ones.

You’re not going to get them. This is why so many are duped.

It’s like all the folks that believed insurance costs would drop because “affordable” was in the title of the statute.
