The nation’s most restrictive abortion law remains in place for now, after a federal appeals court on Thursday sided with the state of Texas. In a brief 2-1 order, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit refused the Justice Department’s request to reinstate an earlier court ruling that had blocked enforcement of the Texas law, which bars the procedure as early as six weeks into pregnancy and makes no exceptions for rape or incest. The brief order, which is expected to be appealed the Supreme Court, was backed by Judges James C. Ho, a nominee of Donald Trump,...

A federal appeals court reinstated Texas’ controversial "fetal heart beat" abortion ban on Friday night, days after a lower court suspended the Republican-backed law. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a temporary stay, effectively pausing U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman’s decision to grant a temporary restraining order against the abortion ban earlier this week. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, had appealed the lower court’s decision. "Great news tonight, The Fifth Circuit has granted an administrative stay on #SB8. I will fight federal overreach at every turn," Paxton wrote on Twitter after the decision. The appeals court...

A federal appeals court says Mississippi's ban on abortion at 15 weeks is unconstitutional. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued the ruling Friday. It says a lower court judge ruled correctly when he blocked the state law from taking effect in 2018. The only abortion clinic in Mississippi sued the state after Republican Gov. Phil Bryant signed the law. Mississippi legislators came back in 2019 and passed a more restrictive law to ban most abortions at about six weeks. The same federal district judge blocked that law too. A legal fight over it continues.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Some Ohio lawmakers are proposing new legislation that would put a ban on all abortions. Last General Assembly, the bill that would have completely banned abortions had no exceptions for life of the mother, incest, or rape; and it carried a potential murder charge for women who have abortions and the doctors that perform them. The bill introduced this week at the Statehouse by Republican State Representatives Ron Hood (term limited) and Candice Keller (running for State Senate) appears to be similar. Hood was one of two joint sponsors on last year's bill, Keller was a co-sponsor....

A group of conservative lawmakers in Ohio has introduced a bill to outlaw abortion outright except to save the pregnant woman’s life. State Rep. Candice Keller, a Republican from Middletown, says the bill’s backers are tired of taking an incremental approach to ending abortion. “The time for regulating evil and compromise is over,” she said in a statement. “The time has come to abolish abortion in its entirety and recognize that each individual has the inviolable and inalienable Right to Life.” The legislation, introduced Thursday, declares a fetus a person and would subject doctors who terminate pregnancies to potential murder...

Alabama's near-total abortion ban blocked by federal judge By Kate Smith October 29, 2019 / 3:25 PM / CBS News Alabama's near-total ban on abortion has just been blocked from implementation. The ban, dubbed the "Human Life Protection Act," was set to take effect on November 15. A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction against the ban on Tuesday morning, effectively halting the law from taking effect while the lawsuit challenging the ban continues. Steve Marshall, Alabama's attorney general, said the decision "was not unexpected," noting that the point of the law was to potentially overturn Roe v. Wade, the...

GILMER, Texas — The Gilmer City Council passed an ordinance Tuesday officially banning abortions. The move comes one day after Tenaha also approved an ordinance to ban abortions. The city council voted 4-1 with two council members absent from the meeting. The ordinance also declared Gilmer a "Sanctuary City for the Unborn." "We need to have the discussion and the talk. We have to get beyond the emotions and sit down and have the talk," City Manager Greg Hutson said. Unlike previous ordinances, Gilmer's ordinance does not ban the morning-after pill. Hutson says the 1973 Supreme Court Case Roe vs....

(Reuters) - Iowa’s Republican-controlled legislature passed the most restrictive abortion ban in the United States on Wednesday, outlawing the procedure after a fetal heartbeat is detected, often at six weeks and before a woman realizes she is pregnant. The Senate voted 29-17 to pass the House of Representatives-approved bill, according to the legislature’s online voting tallies. The bill now goes to Republican Governor Kim Reynolds, an abortion opponent, who has not said publicly whether she will sign it into law. The legislation is aimed at triggering a challenge to Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 landmark decision which...

Thousands of Poles, many dressed in black, have rallied in front of parliament in Warsaw to protest a proposed bill that would impose a complete ban on abortion. Speakers at the protest said a total ban on abortion, including for victims of rape or women whose lives are endangered by a pregnancy, would be “barbaric.” Poland already has one of Europe’s most restrictive abortion laws. …

On Twitter on Monday night, it’s Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI)v. former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton when it comes to abortion. Walker signed into law on Monday in Wisconsin a bill that bans abortions in his state after 20 weeks, when babies in the womb are widely considered to have reached a threshold in their development before birth where they can feel pain. “At five months, that’s the time when that unborn child can feel pain,” Walker said on Monday when signing the bill into law, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “When an unborn child can feel pain, we...

Partial-birth law validated - A sharply divided federal appeals court upheld Virginia's ban on partial-birth abortion Wednesday, ruling that the statute does not unduly burden a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy by more conventional means. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in a 6-5 decision that the 2003 law also makes clear the type of conduct that is banned, making it unlikely that a doctor would be prosecuted for accidentally performing the procedure, which has the medical term "intact dilation and extraction." The decision reversed a 2-1 panel ruling striking down the law, which is similar to...

Nicaragua Overwhelmingly Renews Total Abortion Ban in 66-3 Vote By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman MANAGUA, September 13, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com)--The Nicaraguan congress voted today overwhelmingly  to renew the penal code's punishment of all abortions, striking down an amendment that would have created an exemption for "therapeutic abortion." Although there was concern that the governing Sandinista party might renege on its 2006 campaign promise to support the anti-abortion penal code, the party kept its promise and voted to maintain the law.  The three votes against were from the far-left Movimiento Renovador Sandinista (MRS), a group that split from the original Sandinista party in...

Pierre, SD (LifeNews.com) -- A South Dakota judge has ruled that pro-life state Rep. Roger Hunt should have to identify who gave his corporation a large gift he transferred to the pro-life group seeking to uphold the state's abortion ban. The $750,000 donation came under question for being sent to a company Hunt set up and then going to a pro-life group. State voters rejected the ban last November though polls showed they would have supported an abortion ban with rape and incest exceptions. Hunt, a Republican, is under fire for the donations he made from a business called Promising...
