Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is planning to release legislation next week that would provide legal status for six years to undocumented immigrants in the United States, he said in an interview Wednesday. Issa, an influential Republican who leads the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, described the legislation as a “come-from-the-shadows” effort that would allow the government to do a full accounting of those who are in the U.S. illegally. Immigrants in this new status would be able to travel to their native country while on this temporary visa, he said.

A spokesman for House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) confirmed to Breitbart News on Wednesday that the chairman is currently drafting legislation that would grant legal status to at least some of America’s 11 million illegal immigrants. On Tuesday morning, The Hill reported that Issa was working on such a bill. “Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) has also started work on a bill that would deal with the immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, and has been briefing stakeholders on it for feedback, according to three people familiar with the matter,” The Hill’s Jennifer Martinez...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday held out the possibility that he might bring U.S. immigration legislation to the floor by the end of the year. Asked at a question-and-answer session with reporters if he intends to bring up immigration reform this year, Boehner, a Republican, replied: "I still think that immigration reform is an important subject that needs to be addressed and I am hopeful."

SNIP "There is still a window," says one House GOP aide involved in crafting a reform proposal. "The leadership has said keep working on it and see what you can do." SNIP That skepticism is probably shared by a large number of House Republicans, perhaps enough to kill any reform proposal. But the reformers, led byObama, are still trying. They have the Senate bill in their pocket. They have nearly unanimous Democratic support plus a significant number of Republicans. They have the support of powerful interest groups. And they have money, money, money. At a recent Congressional Hispanic Conference meeting,...

We still need to pass a farm bill. And with the shutdown behind us and budget committees forming, we now have an opportunity to focus on a sensible budget that...

President Barack Obama is not an overtly religious man. He and his family rarely attend church, and he almost never elaborates in public about his own relationship to his Christian faith. But away from the public eye, advisers say, the president has carefully nurtured a sense of spirituality that has served as a grounding mechanism during turbulent times, when the obstacles to governing a deeply divided nation seem nearly insurmountable. Every year on Aug. 4, the president's birthday, Obama convenes a group of pastors by phone to receive their prayers for him for the year to come. During the most...

In an opinion piece in The Week today, Bill Scher added his voice to the growing chorus in the media pushing to get Boehner to cave on immigration. Scher clearly lays out the new media mission: get Boehner to “fold again” on Obama’s next agenda item, immigration reform. Many presume the Republican House is a black hole sucking President Obama's second-term agenda into oblivion. But the list of Boehner's past retreats offers a glimmer of hope, especially to advocates of immigration reform. Though it has languished in the House, an immigration overhaul passed with bipartisan support in the Senate, and...

Business groups that want Republicans to compromise more with Democrats and Washington's permanent political class on comprehensive immigration reform may declare war on Tea Party candidates by putting money behind moderate and centrist candidates in Republican primaries. According to the Wall Street Journal, groups like the Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable are thinking about "backing challengers to tea-party conservatives in GOP primaries, increasing political engagement with centrist Republicans." The Chamber of Commerce is reportedly "researching" what races they can influence in GOP primaries "in hopes of replacing tea-party conservatives with more business-friendly pragmatists" who would include support for...
