Amid the current national debate over immigration policies, racial discrimination, LGBTQ rights, and executive power, the anniversary of an important legal and political dispute that has directly shaped that debate will pass quietly, its legacy all but forgotten. In September 1958, sixty years ago next week, the United States Supreme Court finally earned its hard-fought reputation as a co-equal branch of the federal government, in a courtroom drama filled with urgency and uncertainty. For perhaps the first time, the high court put muscle behind its mandate, asserting in unequivocal terms that its interpretation of the Constitution was the "supreme law...

The wife and I are planning a trip down to southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas in late September/early October. We're planning on hitting some national parks along the way - Fort Scott NHS, George Washington Carver NM, Wilson's Creek NB, etc. It's gonna be a leisurely "We'll leave from Kansas City and start driving and see where we end up" kind of trip. There's no set itinerary other than we'll be down that way for about 5 days or so. I've requested the usual travel guides - state of Arkansas, state of Missouri, Springfield Mo CVB, etc. But I'm looking...

Among the endless encomiums for John McCain on today’s Morning Joe, one stood out: Andrea Mitchell lavishing praise on McCain for, together with John Kerry, giving political “cover” to “accused draft dodger” Bill Clinton. Mitchell: “One of the most sterling parts of his character is the way he grew and changed and reached not just across the aisle but across huge gulfs. And I am really struck by what I was covering back in the ’90s, which was the growing relationship when I was covering the Senate between John Kerry and John McCain, not likely partners on anything when they...

Arkansas taxpayers won another victory in court Monday when a federal judge rejected Planned Parenthood’s argument against defunding it of Medicaid dollars. Arkansas moved to strip the abortion chain of taxpayer dollars in 2015 after undercover videos exposed Planned Parenthood’s baby body parts trade. The abortion chain sued, but in November, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals granted a victory to the state. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker also ruled against the abortion group by rejecting its new request for a preliminary injunction against the state, Arkansas Online reports. Baker is the same judge who initially sided with...

Like every presidential election that liberals lose, years later we’re still hearing about how unfair it all was. Of course, the favorite complaint of liberals this time around is “Russia did it!” Even if you accept for the sake of argument that Russia wanted Trump to win and hacked John Podesta’s email (and neither of those assertions may be true), buying some inconsequential Facebook ads for both sides and revealing the contents of John Podesta’s emails (none of which turned into truly major stories) wasn’t exactly a game changer. Liberals also noted that Hillary would have won had the election...

A top conservative leader criticized former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) for tweeting out a picture of gang members, saying they were House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) “campaign committee.” Bob Vander Plaats, the president and CEO of Iowan conservative group The Family Leader, chastised the former governor on Saturday. “Where did my friend and pastor @GovMikeHuckabee go?” Vander Plaats tweeted. “I want him back. . The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Arkansas to enforce a law restricting medication abortions, rejecting an appeal from the Planned Parenthood affiliate in the state. Planned Parenthood had asked the high court to review an appeals court ruling on the abortion pill rules and reinstate a lower court order that had blocked them from taking effect. The law in question says doctors who provide abortion pills must hold a contract with another physician who has admitting privileges at a hospital, and would agree to handle and treat complications. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had reversed a court...
