More than 1,000 additional auto dealers have registered for the point-of-sale electric vehicle tax credit since it became available Jan. 1, the Treasury Department confirmed Friday morning. Treasury officials told reporters that as of Friday, more than 8,700 dealers had registered for the credit, up from the 7,400 announced in late December. Alterations to the credit under the Inflation Reduction Act allow electric vehicle buyers to claim it upon purchase from registered dealers rather than waiting until filing their taxes the following year. The 7,400 number was itself an increase from the 7,000 dealers announced earlier in December by the...

Tesla got a carve-out. It’s a good day for auto dealers in the Sunshine State, and not so great for motorists who’d prefer a more direct route for buying a new coupe, sedan or SUV. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a measure (HB 637) banning most direct-to-consumer vehicle sales, solidifying the future viability of car-selling operations across the Sunshine State. The measure, championed and authored by lobbyists representing the Florida Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), prohibits automakers from selling vehicles directly to buyers. That restriction, which goes into effect July 1, was considered a direct threat to the business model of Tesla, an...

White House sought closing of franchises now offered openings: Washington -- An auto dealers group criticized President Barack Obama Friday for applauding General Motors Co.'s decision to allow hundreds of dealerships targeted to close to remain open. Bailey Wood, a spokesman for the National Automobile Dealers Association, said Obama's auto task force last year "required the closure of nearly 2,500 dealerships at a cost of 100,000 jobs," as a condition of bailing out GM and Chrysler Group LLC. "Now he is touting the fact that jobs were created after dealer arbitration legislation, which his administration opposed, forced GM/Chrysler to reevaluate...

President Barack Obama resembles the used car dealer in the CARFAX commercial. You've probably seen the commercial. A sleazy used car dealer is attempting to push a customer into buying an apparent clunker. The customer says he won't buy without seeing the CARFAX which would provide a history of the car so the customer would know what he was getting. Obama has been pressuring Congress to adopt some type of health care related program without the lengthy debate that should precede any major change in health care. Obama's attempt to force the issue implied a major flaw with the proposal,...

He ran as a bipartisan outsider, but critics see a captive of business. SACRAMENTO – Californians were about to get a three-day "cooling off" period to return a used car when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger weighed in. In the waning hours of this year's legislative session, Schwarzenegger's aides told Senate Leader John Burton that the governor would veto a so-called "Car Buyer's Bill of Rights" unless lawmakers dropped the portion letting buyers return a car in three days, Burton said. Auto dealers - among the governor's biggest backers - opposed the provision.n the waning hours of this year's legislative session, Schwarzenegger's...
