The Friends of Big Bear Valley organization says their eaglet has been officially named! The chick hatched on March 3 this year, in a nest in the San Bernardino National Forest. It was the first healthy chick in two years for Big Bear’s famed bald eagle pair Jackie and Shadow. The second egg in the same nest never hatched. Nearly 10,000 names were submitted, but Spirit won out for the baby bald eagle, whose gender is not yet known. The winning name was sent by Patti G, according to the organization.

A contest fundraiser to name the little eaglet is open until March 25. After the deadline, 35 names will be randomly drawn. The names will then be given to local Big Bear third grade classrooms for a final vote. After that, all submissions will be entered into a random drawing for prizes, including Jackie and Shadow plush toys, a framed painting of the bald eagle couple, an eagle tapestry, and other gifts. An Airbnb host who canceled a reservation and told the guest, "One word says it all. Asian," has agreed to pay a $5,000 fine and attend a college course in Asian-American studies, officials with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing said Thursday. The guest, Dyne Suh, had booked the home as part of a ski trip with her fiancé and friends in Big Bear in February. Two San Bernardino County SheriffÂ’s deputies have been shot while pursuing a carjacking and home-invasion suspect in the Angelus Oaks area of Big Bear. A law enforcement source confirms to the Associated Press that the assailant is triple-murder suspect Christopher Dorner, who is said to be heavily armed in engaging in gunfire with authorities. Repeated gunshots could be heard on Glass Road west of 7 Oaks just after 1:30 p.m. and officials requested an armored vehicle to help remove several injured deputies from the scene. Citing strained food and fuel supplies because of rough weather and tough road conditions, San Bernardino County officials Sunday evening closed visitors' access to the Big Bear Valley. A mountain lion killed a goat at a children's camp this weekend near Big Bear Lake, prompting warnings that camp operators should protect their young visitors by securing garbage and small animals. "The problem with this cat is its bold behavior," Brennan said. "It entered a camp and took a goat among 200 sleeping kids."
