House Republicans struggling to preserve their majority are facing a wave of Democratic money and enthusiasm in suburban districts across the country, as well-educated and moderate voters consider new checks on President Trump. An analysis of the types of districts in play shows that two-thirds of the Republican-held seats that a top election handicapper sees as vulnerable are in suburban areas. That has Republicans on defense in an area where Trump has bled support, even in the 2016 election he won. Compact fluorescent lamps, or CFLs, have been counted on to light the way to a more energy-efficient future. Compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, which will gradually be phased out starting in January, CFLs use about a fifth the power and have a life six to 10 times as great. However, since the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission launched its online safety complaints database in March, there have been 34 reports made by people about CFLs that emitted smoke or a burning odor and four reports of the devices catching fire. If every household in America changed just one traditional light bulb to a energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulb at home, combined efforts would save 5.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year or $526 million a year in electric expenses. This would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars. CFL light bulbs use 2/3 less energy than standard incandescent light bulbs and last up to ten times longer.
