  • Open Thread: NFL Draft 2020 Day 1 First Round

As some momentary relief from a sports less world tonight Thursday is the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. I will be booing Roger Goodell. From all the reports I have read the Bengals and 'Skins are locked into picking Bayou Joe Burrow and Chase Young. Where the action might get interesting is Detroit at number 3 with reports the front office is divided in who to pick and other teams eyeing to move up to perhaps pick off Tua. Be interesting if there are technical issues during this virtual draft.
  • NFL draft bets: We know three QBs will go in the first round. Will four? Five?

We’ve seen plenty of examples of quarterbacks being overdrafted. The Minnesota Vikings picked Christian Ponder way before they should have. EJ Manuel became Buffalo’s first-round pick. And so on. That happens when teams are desperate. There aren’t many franchises clamoring for a quarterback now. Former MVP Cam Newton is unsigned, as is 2019 passing leader Jameis Winston. They’re both former No. 1 overall picks. The Cincinnati Bengals haven’t traded Andy Dalton yet, and he’s a three-time Pro Bowler. Scoff at them if you wish, but a few years ago they’d have been in demand. The NFL quarterback field has never...
  • NFL Doctor: Broad Testing Needed For League To Reopen

NFL Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allen Sills said that "widespread testing would have to be available before the reopening of the league could be contemplated," according to Judy Battista of NFL.com. Sills "cautioned against assuming that earlier comments from league officials about the league's focus on starting the season on time mean it will definitely happen." He said, "That's everyone's hope, that we are in a position to do that. But the reality is none of us know those facts for certain right now." Sills added that the "widespread availability of point of care testing -- where a test could...

Baker said his parents were in perfect health until three weeks ago when they visited their doctor, who told both of them that they may have a slight case of pneumonia but should be fine. When they continued to feel worse, his parents went to the hospital on March 19. .... “I started thinking, "This has got to stop. We’ve got to work to stop spreading this virus,'” said Baker. He said that people have to stop thinking, "I’m too young, I’m too healthy" and realize that "it could happen to somebody in your family.”

As essentially everyone in the world is being asked to stay indoors and away from others during the coronavirus pandemic, we no longer have the one thing that could reliably bring us together and keep us from vacating our couches: live sports. Nearly every active sports league has suspended games, including the NCAA’s marquee, March Madness. Instead of spending this week pretending to be busy at work while secretly watching college basketball games at our desks and checking our brackets on our smartphones during meetings, many of us are stuck indoors with our pets, roommates, partners, and children — and...

Here is the reality about the the myriad of Patriots cheating scandals that have surfaced under Bill Belichick: despite the sensationalist national media coverage, they are all minimal infractions, and going on the facts, incredibly dull. That is the case regarding the latest allegation of supposed Patriots subterfuge. It all started Monday afternoon, when Bengals head coach Zac Taylor confirmed at his press conference the NFL is investigating New England for filming the Cincinnati sideline from the press box during its contest Sunday against the Browns. The bullet-point description of the claim reads like a redux of Spygate, the infamous...

In my post yesterday about Colin Kaepernick’s upcoming NFL workout session, I confessed to not knowing the NFL well enough to opine on whether it makes sense for a particular team to sign Kaepernick. However, there’s one team I know very well — the Washington Redskins. There is no good reason for the Redskins to sign Kaepernick. They have won just one game this season and, in an optimistic scenario, they might win three. The rest of the season will be devoted to providing experience for their number one pick in the 2019 draft — quarterback Dwayne Haskins. He will...

Retired NFL player Le’Ron McClain took to Twitter to ask for help with injuries he said he suffered since his football career, pleading with the league to help him get his “head checked.” McClain left the league after seven seasons, having played for the Baltimore Ravens, San Diego Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs before retiring in 2013. However, he wrote on Saturday that he is still dealing with the physical effects of playing football for so long. "Playing fullback since high school. Its takes too f---ing much to do anything. My brain is f---ing tired," McClain wrote. "@NFL i need...

Colin Kaepernick. Remember him? Below-average quarterback. Above-average poseur. Not “activist,” not really. Activists actually say stuff. Kaepernick almost never says anything. He’s like the Queen or most popes — you have to read the deep-background musings of supposed members of his inner circle to get a clue as to what he might be thinking. Kaepernick hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016, when anyway he was merely the disappointing starter on its worst team, and given that dozens of quarterbacks have entered the league since then and that he’s been gathering rust like the Tin Woodman for three years, he...

To say the Patriots are a dominant team is an understatement. In 2019 they’ll wrap up the most dominant decade in NFL history. In the decade of 2010 to 2018, the Patriots are 129-37, a winning percentage of .777. As noted by Rene Bugner, New England could go 3-13 in 2019 and still have the best winning percentage of any NFL team in any decade.

The NFL is being urged to fire the crew who officiated the NFC Championship game between the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints over a blown call in the fourth quarter of the matchup. A petition launched after the Rams defeated the Saints in overtime, 26-23, has asked the league to fire official Bill Vinovich and the rest of the officials who were in charge Sunday afternoon. The officials came under fire after missing a clear pass interference penalty late in the fourth quarter.

There are only two more weekends of regular season NFL play after this weekend. However, for many teams Week 15 has become Weak 15, as many fans have once again decided to stay home. If the reaction of the fans is any indication, the most ridiculed team of the league for attendance this weekend is the Cincinnati Bengals. Many fans took to Twitter to comment on the sparse attendance at Cincy’s Paul Brown Stadium, when Oakland Raiders came to town:
