"Sunset" must be my favorite cowboy movie, with two of my favorite actors - James Garner and Bruce Willis - playing two of my favorite historical figures - Wyatt Earp and Tom Mix - friends in real life. Tom Mix was one of the pallbearers at Earp's funeral.
  • GOP candidate accused of pandering after he transforms into cowboy for Texas congressional run

New Jersey boy. Pro wrestler. Republican candidate in Nevada. Dan Rodimer has led many lives, but his latest - a cowboy-hat-wearing, Southern-drawling bull rider - might be the most extreme transformation to date. In his first ad as a candidate for Texas's 6th Congressional District, "Big Dan" Rodimer speaks in a gravelly, indistinct Southern accent, throws jabs at Democratic policies and compares House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to a bull. The bull he's supposedly riding in the ad. But the New Jersey native did not have the twang last year when he ran for Congress in Nevada. In one of...

"Dad was One Cowboy who stood to uphold and defend the United States Constitution against domestic adversaries" Haunted by the mental picture of the body of patriot cowboy LaVoy Finicum lying in the winter Oregon snow, Canada Free Press wrote back in March of 2016… ““Maybe some day, a song writer with heart will come along and mark his passing with ‘The Ballad of LaVoy Finicum’ to remind us all in song about the cold-blooded cruelty of governments who put power and one-upmanship ahead of the dignity of human life.” That day has come. Much better than any ballad is...

Sarah Palin was spotted at the Spurs vs. Denver Nuggets game on Monday, but that's not all she did during her Texas jaunt. The 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate visited daughter Bristol and grandson Tripp in Austin, where they live. Palin and Tripp made the drive to watch the Spurs in action. In an interview with the San Antonio Express-News, the former Alaska governor raved about watching Gregg Popovich's coaching and how "fun" watching the team regroup is. In addition to witnessing the Spurs' 104-103 nail-biter win, she also posted a series of photos to prove "God blessed Texas."...
  • 'Delta Hill Riders': African-American cowboy culture in the Mississippi Delta

Rory Doyle’s ongoing personal project shares the story of African-American cowboy culture in the rural Mississippi Delta, challenging the Hollywood portrayal of the American cowboy. The work highlights the black cowboys and cowgirls in the Delta as a proud group existing beyond the movie image of the American West. The project began in early 2017 when Doyle attended a rodeo celebrating black cowboy heritage in the region. Over the past year, he’s documented this band of horse riders in a place not typically known for its cowboys. A recent article from Smithsonian magazine estimated that one in four cowboys was...

A cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. “Have you ever done anything of particular merit?”, St. Peter asked. “Well, I can think of one thing,” the cowboy offered. ”On a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota, I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen. So, I approached the largest and most tattooed biker and smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground. I yelled, ‘Now, back...

Imagine if President Trump stayed hidden in the White House because of threats made against him. Florida congresswoman, Rep. Frederica Wilson, has not been seen in Washington, D.C. for days and it appears it's all because of those Trump supporters. The Democrat from Miami was all over the media last week condemning the president for a condolence call he made to the wife of Sgt. La David Johnson, who was killed in an Oct. 4 ambush in Niger. But after creating a torrential firestorm with her attacks, the lawmaker found herself the target of ongoing threats against her, the Miami...

Though our stars tend to rise and fall in opposition through the years, your reputation for adventure, fearlessness and a legendary hunger for more lingers, and for the most part we find that admirable—no, more than that—we find it astonishing. We may denigrate your American whisky (as well as your tendency to spell it with the Irish ‘e’) as you joke about our pasty faces and reliance upon dentures but we are cousins—if not always kissing—and share a rich common language, culture, customs and cuisine. We are more alike than different in nearly every respect but these: One, we are...

TOMBSTONE – Saddle up and hang onto your hats! It’s rodeo time! While Arizona celebrates Tucson Rodeo festivities, third-graders from Huachuca City School are learning all about riding, roping and ranching, as well as a little rodeoing on the side. On Wednesday, about 50 young buckaroos traveled to Tombstone High School for a crash course on cowboys and ranching. The Future Farmers of America students organized the event and worked with the young cowboys and cowgirls as they dabbled in bull riding and roping and learned how to saddle a horse. They met goats and other petting zoo animals and...

Before the Mexican-American War concluded in 1848, American traders who traveled to the Western frontier encountered Spanish vaqueros of northern Mexico. The arrival of railroads and an increased demand for beef during the Civil War drove the need for the cowboy. The earliest known photographs of these iconic Americans are tintypes, taken as early as the 1870s, most likely captured during a trail drive or at an end-of-trail town. The Texas Live Stock Journal wrote glowingly of the cowboy on October 21, 1882: “A man wanting in courage would be as much out of place in a cow-camp, as a...

Police say a rancher jumped on his horse and lassoed a man who was trying to steal a bicycle in the parking lot of an Oregon Walmart. The Medford Mail Tribune reports 28-year-old Robert Borba was at the Eagle Point store getting dog food Friday when he heard a woman screaming that someone was trying to steal her bike. The rancher says he quickly got his horse out of its trailer, grabbed a rope, rode over and lassoed the man and bicycle.
  • Rancher on horseback lassoes would-be bike bandit in Walmart parking lot

An attempted bicycle theft in a Walmart parking lot was foiled by a cattle rancher on horseback, who chased the thief down and lassoed him until the local police in southern Oregon could arrive. David Stepp said that he had been sitting in his car nearby when he saw the cowboy trotting across the parking lot on his horse after the thief, who was trying to escape on the stolen bicycle. When the thief dismounted and tried to flee on foot, Stepp watched as the cowboy lassoed him by the ankle. The thief then grabbed a tree and held on...

A world where the government can take your children, your land, tax or fine you out of livelihood, seize your bank accounts, your property, impose the laws of eminent domain and tell you where you can and cannot pray The tragedy of Tuesday’s Oregon Malheur refuge affair is that like most other Americans, the occupiers mistakenly assume they still have freedom of movement in today’s America. They didn’t and don’t. And now a dead cowboy, barely mentioned in the Fox/Trump mainstream media saturation coverage, is the tragic result. The shooting which claimed the life of rancher LaVoy Finicum, father of...
