STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) - Pilots who have flown massive aircraft like the C-130 know all too well the challenges and dangers that come along with it. We spoke with a veteran pilot Thursday who is heartbroken for the airmen killed in the crash in Port Wentworth Wednesday. He says problems arise from the size, the weight, and the age of these aircraft. Derek Duke flew transport planes like the C-130 in his 30-year career as an Air Force pilot. He watched his television Wednesday through the coverage of the crash - heartbroken - but also trying to analyze what went...

For white-knuckle flyers like me, this week's tragic accident aboard a Southwest Airlines flight from New York to Texas reinforces our worst fears but also reassures us that flying remains the safest means of travel within the United States. I fly 100,000 miles a year, despite my phobias, and have encountered everything but an actual crash or loss of life aboard the many flights I've taken -- last-minute aborted landings, engine failure, lightning strikes, fires in the galley, loss of the hydraulic system, geese sucked into the engine during takeoff. Some of these incidents required emergency landings with runways foamed...

THE REMAINS of an out-of-control Chinese space station are expected to light up the sky with “fireballs” before crashing down to Earth within days. China’s defunct space station, named Tiangong-1 or “heavenly place”, is expected to fall to Earth between March 30 and April 2, latest estimates suggest. Most of the eight-tonne space probe, launched in 2011, should “burn up” in the atmosphere before crash landing, Chinese space officials say. China’s space agency, CNSA, have never fully explained why Tiangong-1 "ceased functioning" on March 16 after reaching its "final phase of life". According to space experts, the odds of being...

I am not much one for rubbernecking at car crashes. (I’m not setting you up for a Congress joke, here. That comes later.) Most of the time they are scary but ultimately insignificant episodes involving a little property damage and a great deal of inconvenience. Sometimes they are much worse, and I couldn’t help looking at the car blazing in the middle of the freeway in the middle of the day, looking more like it had been bombed or hit with a rocket than like it had been involved in an accident. Thick black smoke covered both sides of the...

Yesterday, as I sat down from a long day of being disconnected from the electronics of the world, my initial reaction to the market drop was gut wrenching to say the least. Acknowledging the news, I started to ponder why such a devastating drop. While percentage wise, based on the current market value this really appears to be more like a correction, but what exactly is it and why? I am no financial guru, just a little guy on the outside looking in. But a market losing confidence is a key indicator for a crash. Just before the State of...

A MASSIVE new search for the doomed Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 using underwater drones has begun today. The aircraft vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014 in one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries. The southeast Asian nation has now agreed to pay US firm Ocean Infinity up to $70 million if it finds the plane within 90 days. Its search vessel, the Seabed Constructor, today reached the remote spot in the Indian Ocean where Australian scientists believe the plane went down. Eight drone-like underwater vehicles will now scour the ocean floor for wreckage in an area...
