Republican Elbert Guillory, a state senator in Louisiana, has released a new web video through his Free At Last PAC that criticizes Democratic senator Mary Landrieu's record. "Since 1996, black unemployment has doubled and the poverty rate for blacks has skyrocketed. Mary hasn't helped us all," says Guillory. "So on November 4, let's send her back home to her father's house or to her mansion in Washington, D.C., or wherever the heck she lives." Opelousas Sen. Elbert Guillory has jumped to the Republican Party, becoming Louisiana's only black state senator in the GOP. Guillory announced Friday that he's leaving the Democratic Party. A spokeswoman for the Secretary of State's Office said Guillory filed paperwork on Wednesday registering as a Republican. The state GOP says Guillory is Louisiana's first black Republican state senator since Reconstruction.

Louisiana state Sen. Elbert Guillory has joined the Republican Party, becoming the first black Republican senator in Louisiana since Reconstruction, according to a report in The Advertiser. This is the second time Guillory, of Opelousas, has switched parties; the lawmaker was a Republican before running for the state House in 2007.
