Inflation ticked higher once again in March, with consumer prices up 0.4 percent over the previous month and 3.5 percent compared to one year earlier. The latest data marks the third month in a row that the consumer price index (CPI), a closely watched gauge of inflation, has come in hotter than expected, likely throwing cold water on hopes that the Federal Reserve would begin cutting interest rates soon.

A 90-year-old former Marine, who suffers from Alzheimer's, was found dead in the backseat of a nursing home van after staff allegedly left him there for 20 hours. Staff at Canyon Winds Assisted Living & Memory Care in Mesa, Arizona only realized that Lawrence Bearse was missing when his wife came to visit him on Thursday. The grandfather had been taken to visit the doctor's the previous day by a nursing home staff member, but when they returned to the facility, the employee reportedly forgot about Bearse. He was left in the vehicle in the facility parking lot for an...

A crazy scene unfolded on Friday night in Vancouver, Washington, as a large crowd formed to support a woman who says that her mother was the victim of “medical kidnapping.” The media rushed to portray the crowd as wild anti-vaxxers — without telling the story of what happened or why they were actually there.

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden will unveil a sweeping proposal Tuesday to help families pay for child care for children 4 and under, in-home elder care for aging parents, and long-term care for the disabled. The plan, estimated to cost $775 billion over 10 years, would also fund 150,000 public health care worker jobs. "If we truly want to reward work in this country, we have to ease the financial burden of care that families are carrying, and we have to elevate the compensation, benefits, training, and education opportunities for certification, and dignity of caregiving workers and educators," Biden's...

The letter was heartbreaking as it recounted the death of an 88-year-old woman in a New York nursing home. But it was also angry and accurate about a strange New York policy that is fatally wrongheaded. “I am wondering who will hold Gov. Cuomo accountable for the deaths of so many older people due to his reckless decision to place covid19 patients in nursing and rehabilitation homes,” the letter began. “I am writing as a daughter who lost her beautiful 88 year old mother who was receiving physical therapy at one such facility.” . . . . Mullin had another...

November 27, 2018 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Almost all of the members of a conservative order of nuns that serve the elderly in French nursing homes have announced that they have asked to be released from their vows following attempts by the Vatican to force them to alter their way of life and to “modernize” their order. According to their lay supporters, the sisters have been accused of engaging in “too much prayer” and concerns have been expressed that they wear the guimpe, a traditional form of religious head covering used by nuns that is no longer in vogue among the Church’s...

WASHINGTON, DC – As the population ages, incidents of elder abuse increase, according to the World Health Organization. WHO estimates that almost 17% of seniors 60 years of age and older have experienced some form of abuse over the past 12 months. “Nearly 42 million residents of the U.S. are 60 years old. That means more than seven million seniors were ill-treated by caregivers, family members and even friends last year. But, the alarming fact is that segment of the population is growing exceptionally fast. In fact, each day 10,000 more citizens turn 65. The Census Bureau estimates that by...

The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General on Thursday charged a licensed practical nurse with involuntary manslaughter in the April 13 death of Herbert R. McMaster Sr. in the nursing home at Cathedral Village, in the Upper Roxborough section of Philadelphia. Christann S. Gainey, 30, was also charged with neglect of a care-dependent person and tampering with records for allegedly failing to provide appropriate care to McMaster, the father of former national security adviser H.R. McMaster Jr., after he fell in his room and hit his head, according to an eight-page criminal complaint.

My Mom who is 101 years old fell in the bathroom, 10:30 this morning. She needed 16 stitches at the ER. Called 911 and they came firefighters first and then EMT's. Things went well, but of course she is pretty sore. However, 6:00 pm we get a doorbell ring. It's the police, they say they are here for a welfare check. Well ok, I introduce them to my Mom who is sitting in my easy chair, she is happy for the attention. So I ask is this normal procedure. Well the young policeman, says that the EMT or Firefighter, thought...

The woman who sold the freezer told her neighbor not to open it because a Sunday school class was using it as a time capsule. The truth wasn’t nearly so innocent. The woman, who asked not to be identified, told WNCN that she opened the freezer Friday, three weeks after getting it, because no one from the church came by. “A church was supposed to come, pick up the items inside the freezer. I was supposed to get the freezer back,” she said. “The church never came. I decided to open it.” Instead of a time capsule, the Goldsboro, North...

Newsmax Professor: Robots Are the Future of Elder Care Sunday, July 20, 2014 10:01 AM By: Sandy Fitzgerald Many older people need someone who is always there to help them with their everyday tasks, to listen to their stories, and to help them live independently — in other words, a robot caregiver, writes an associate professor of geriatrics in Sunday's New York Times. "That may sound like an oxymoron," writes the University of California's Louise Aronson in her opinion piece. "In an ideal world, it would be: Each of us would have at least one kind and fully capable human...

I need help from fellow FReepers. My mother is living in assisted living 2500 miles from me. She will turn 100 in August, and I need ideas on how to help her celebrate. She is mentally sharp, but she is declining physically. She is confined to a wheel chair, or a walker, now and her hearing is quite impaired. Consequently, she does not like more than one, or two people in the room with her at the same time; and she just gets furious if people talk to each other in her presence.I think the sounds get all jumbled and...

For years, politicians and retirees could safely ignore the crisis facing America's Social Security system. The problems lay in a distant, hazy future, far beyond the next Election Day and the next round of golf. That is now changing; the ground is starting to shake. The first of America's 78 million baby boomers are turning 66, which means they're eligible for full Social Security benefits. Last year, this same group began to qualify for Medicare, whose enrollment age is 65. A goodly number of boomers have been receiving reduced Social Security benefits since 2008, when the oldest turned 62. Nearly...

So the Democrats have a problem convincing senior citizens that socialized medicine won’t diminish the already dubious quality of care they receive through Medicare. [h/t Instapundit] Seniors no doubt base this suspicion in large part on their 50+ adult years of watching politicians over-promise and under-deliver. They probably remember back to 1965 when Medicare itself was sold as a cost-saving measure, and today we’re told it’s going to bankrupt the government unless we socialize 15% of the economy. They no doubt wonder how long it will be before Obama’s ideological descendants will tell us that Obama’s miracle plan is a...

I admit that, lately, I can’t help but enjoy the piquant taste of schadenfreude, which is a fine German word (the language from which our own English is descended, by the way) meaning something like “enjoying the hell out of the discomfort of others.” Such inappropriate and immature feelings of glee on my part almost totally result from the national howl of protest at what we all now call “ObamaCare,” which is the Democrat plan for national health care, I mean…insurance, “reform.” I think it’s great seeing “the masses” out and about at sundry town halls, dissenting with patriotic fervor...

The powerful story of Barbara Wagner demonstrates why this discussion is of utmost importance. When Barbara’s lung cancer reappeared during the spring of 2008 her oncologist recommended aggressive treatment with Tarceva, a new chemotherapy. However, Oregon’s state run health plan denied the potentially life altering drug because they did not feel it was "cost-effective." Instead, the State plan offered to pay for either hospice care or physician-assisted suicide. In stunned disbelief you may ask, "How can this be? This happens in Europe. I’ve heard stories of Britain’s National Health Service delaying intervention until the patient dies or reports of physician-assisted...

I have been sitting quietly on the sidelines watching all of this national debate on healthcare. It is time for me to bring some clarity to the table by explaining many of the problems from the perspective of a doctor. First off, the government has involved very few of us physicians in the healthcare debate. While the American Medical Association has come out in favor of the plan, it is vital to remember that the AMA only represents 17% of the American physician workforce. I have taken care of Medicaid patients for 35 years while representing the only pediatric ophthalmology...

Here is video of ABC's John Stossel destroying Government Health Care with a report that reveals the shocking truth of what it would mean for Americans. He points out that Canadians wait an average of 23 hours when they go to an Emergency Room. A CT Scan takes a month to obtain there as well. Stossel points out it will lead to longer waiting times for everything and rationed care. The result: The reality is that people will die while they wait. He even shows a town in Canada that has a lottery to even get a family doctor! This...

List of priority groups are drawn up Health and social care workers will be vaccinated first, followed by pregnant women and all children under the age of five, under initial plans. The first batches of H1N1 vaccine are due to arrive next month with enough for half the population expected to be delivered by December. It will be the biggest vaccination programme undertaken by the NHS since smallpox in the 1950s. The groups most at risk from the disease will be vaccinated in order of priority as the batches arrive. first heard Dick Morris make this point. The main reason, electorally, that Obamacare is falling apart is that the elderly are rejecting in great numbers. Morris cites a poll in which elderly reject the plan by about 16 points. This is a massive political problem because folks over 65 have about a 70% voting attendance. About 30% of all health care expenses are spent on the last year of someone's life. So, it is the elderly that are the most affected by any health care reform idea. Frankly, the elderly are rejecting Obamacare with good reason.
