Need sources to the correct version of the Forrestal incident I know there are many floating around many total BS. Many here have links to the correct version. I remember seeing videos or "films" back then in school at NAS Jax on the fire but cant recall how they portrayed it Need the real story. Him dropping bombs on the flight deck I believe are BS. Thanks

With all the discussion of John McCain, and with the recent spate of Naval accidents, I found it most interesting to re-vist one of the most catastrophic accidents of the last 40 years, the fire on the USS Forrestal, which killed or injured 300 sailors and came close to losing the ship. Like recent Naval accidents, it was a series of unplanned and unforeseen events, combined with training lapses and poor judgements, all combined with insanely bad luck. And like recent Naval events incredible sailor heroism and self sacrifice when it counted. PS: there has always been rumor about McCain...

In July 1967, a fire broke out on board the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal. An electrical anomaly had caused the discharge of a Zuni rocket on the flight deck, triggering a chain-reaction of explosions that killed 134 sailors and injured 161. At the time, Forrestal was engaged in combat operations in the Gulf of Tonkin, during the Vietnam War. ...The impact of the rocket had also dislodged two of the 1000-lb AN-M65 bombs, which fell to the deck, and lay in the pool of burning fuel between White's aircraft and that of Lieutenant Commander John McCain.

During a recent Republican presidential forum, Donald Trump disparaged Senator John McCain’s war record, claiming that McCain is “not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” And the Internet responded, surfacing a photo that some are calling the perfect comeback and reminder of McCain’s service to his country.
  • Trump’s Dismissal of McCain’s Heroism Shows Lack of Judgment and Decency, And Is Also Dead Wrong

What has gone underplayed in today's widespread outrage over Donald Trump's dismissal of John McCain's war heroism is that the GOP national-poll front-runner's comments, besides demonstrating an idiocratic lack of basic human judgment and decency, are also dead wrong. Because this is Donald Trump, and Donald Trump is a vulgar anti-intellect who cannot string a coherent paragraph together, his full statement contradicts itself several times within 57 short words. So let's just focus on the bolded part from his remarks: He's not a war hero. He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured—OK, I...

A member of The Greater Phoenix Tea Party politely Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to apologize for calling Tea Party members in the House and Senate "hobbits." McCain, who was quoting the Wall Street Journal, made his comments on the Senate floor. "I am sorry if it was misunderstood. I am not sorry for what I said," McCain said to a heated audience. "I mean, why should I when it’s the facts," Senator McCain added.

When the last colliery in the Region closed in 1954, my father borrowed several thousand dollars to pay the bribe necessary to gain entry to the Steamfitters Union. The nearest construction work was far away in Westchester County, New York. My father worked on various construction jobs in Westchester, commuting home only on weekends, until he retired in the late 1970s. When I got to be a teenager, my father was able to pull strings to get me work as a helper on construction. One of the regular journeyman plumbers I used to work with was a thin, depressive Polish...

Does Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump owe Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, an apology for demeaning McCain's war record at an event in Iowa Saturday? "No, not at all," was Trump's answer Sunday in an interview on ABC's "This Week." At the Iowa Family Leadership Summit, Trump said McCain - who spent more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam - is "a war hero 'cause he was captured." "I like people that weren't captured, OK?" Trump said. The comments drew swift and biting condemnation from his fellow candidates and some veterans groups, who called on Trump to...

The decommisioned carrier Forrestal, the first of the Navy's "supercarriers" and a technological marvel when it was launched in the 1950s, will begin its final journey on February 4th when it is towed out of Philadelphia for a trip to Brownsville, Texas, where the ship will be dismantled and recycled. The Navy announced on Friday that the 1,067-foot carrier will be towed down the Delaware River, along the eastern seaboard, and across the Gulf of Mexico to All Star Metals, a company that's expected to spend about two years dismantling the nearly 60,000 ton flattop. The move is part...

Here’s a penny for your thoughts: One red cent could’ve landed you the Navy’s first supercarrier, the decommissioned Forrestal. The U.S. Navy sold the 1,067-foot behemoth to a Texas company, All Star Metals, to be dismantled, scrapped and recycled, Navy officials announced. It's an inauspicious fate for a ship with a colorful — and tragic — history. It's perhaps best known for a 1967 incident in which stray voltage triggered an accidental explosion that struck a plane on the flight deck whose cockpit was occupied by a young John McCain. A chain reaction of blasts and fires ultimately killed 134...

On this day in 1967, one hundred and thirty-four men died and sixty-two were wounded in a fire on an aircraft carrier, the USS Forrestal. Among the planes waited to take off, a missile misfired and hit another plane, sparking a massive inferno. As bombs and fuel exploded, Lt. Commander John McCain jumped out of his own plane and ran toward the flames -- yes, toward the flames -- attempting to rescue another pilot. An exploding bomb then injured McCain in the chest and legs. More information here. Video at link

What's the take around here about the story of McCain being the pilot who started the Forrestal explosions/fire by wet-starting his jet on deck, and touching off the rocket of the A-4 behind him? Did he really get an immediate transfer off the ship even before it was under control? (Like they were afraid the surviving crew was going to basically kill him for this?) Is this something that is an urban legend or did it really occur and he has some or all of the blame for this happening?

Paul H. Nitze, an expert on military power and strategic arms whose roles as negotiator, diplomat and Washington insider spanned the era from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Ronald Reagan and helped shape America's cold war relationship with the Soviet Union, died Tuesday night at his home in Washington. He was 97. The cause was pneumonia, said his wife, Elisabeth Scott Porter. From the beginning of the nuclear age, whether in government or out, Mr. Nitze urged successive American presidents to take measures against what he saw as the Soviet drive to overwhelm the United States through the force of arms....
