Andrew White, the son of former Gov. Mark White, and a member and elder in a PCA church, is running for Texas governor as a democrat candidate. White, 45, is an elder at Christ the King Presbyterian Church in Houston, a conservative congregation that is a member of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). In recent days, he has taken heat from other Democrats for being personally against abortion, though he has said he recognizes that abortion remains legal and that he would not try to change that if elected governor. According to online policy papers, PCA opposes same-sex marriage...

Recently, Dan Proft, who is seeking the Illinois Republican Party's gubernatorial nomination, was quoted in the Daily Herald regarding his position on the right to life issue. Here is Proft's response to the query: "Roe v. Wade is bad constitutional law, inconsistent with our God-given right to life and should be overturned," Proft said. "In addition to an important policy issue, this is a personal issue for me as I was born approximately nine months before the Roe decision and I was adopted. Thus, had the law been a bit different a bit earlier, perhaps the world would never have...

When I started to think about running for governor, and began the process of asking those closest to me about the race, one of the first questions I was always asked (by those who didn’t already know) was, “What is your position on abortion?”. “I’m pro-life” was always my immediate response. This often led to the next obvious question, “Why are you pro-life?” ...

Rochester billionaire Tom Golisano wants to be a real player in the best little gubernatorial election big money can buy. He's already contributed big time to the pot. A vicious primary fight with the Pataki crowd over who would be the nominee on both the Independence and Conservative party lines in November's general election cost Golisano approximately $33 million out of his own pocket. Apparently, getting just one of those minor party lines, the Independence, was enough to consider it money well spent. Buoyed, cheered, enthused, Golisano could spend $40 million, $50 million, $100 million -- whatever it takes --...

Bill McBride, the once-unknown attorney making his first bid for public office, is making a name for himself statewide with an unprecedented financial boost from the Florida Democratic Party. Democrats have started airing TV ads for McBride's campaign for governor, even though the party will not choose its nominee to challenge Republican Gov. Jeb Bush until the Sept. 10 primary election. The party says it also will air ads for McBride's Democratic opponent, former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno. She will make her TV debut next week with a modest ad buy backed by her campaign and the Democratic Party....

Dead even. That's the latest poll result in Maryland's gubernatorial race. This is a bombshell, pure and simple. The contestants are current Democrat Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, daughter of Bobby Kennedy, and Republican Congressman Bob Ehrlich, and they're running neck-in-neck in a state that any Democrat, let alone a Kennedy, should easily win. But KKT is in trouble — she has the party machine behind her in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-1, and in a state that's been a one-party affair for a generation, yet she's frittered away a double-digit margin in the past couple of...

[Excerpt] A Florida Voter poll published Tuesday in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and the Orlando Sentinel showed the uphill battle Reno and every other Democrat against Bush. It found the Republican governor leading Reno 53 percent to 37 percent with 10 percent undecided. Matched against McBride, Bush led 49 percent to 31 percent with 20 percent undecided. But among Democrats, Reno led McBride in the primary 45 percent to 18 percent. "The problem is we have a candidate who is not going to lose the primary and will not win the general election," said Christopher Korge, a major Democratic fund-raiser...

Stiffing Simon By The Prowler Published 5/6/02 1:05:00 AM CALIFORNIA'S MISSING GOP How badly has the Republican Party slipped in California? You judge. With six months to go before a critical general election, in which its gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon is running a competitive race against incumbent Gray Davis with little assistance from the California Republican Party, the state party has budgeted less than $100,000 thus far for its absentee ballot program. In states like California, absentee ballots tend to run in the Republicans' favor, sometimes 2:1 over Democrats. And in past elections, such as Pete Wilson's Senate races or...

Gubernatorial candidates differ on state income tax By Joe White Candidates for governor gave a range of views on tax changes to the Tennessee Health Care Association at a Monday afternoon forum at the downtown Sheraton. Democratic hopeful Phil Bredesen said, “I’m not a believer that an income tax is the right answer to this problem.” His Democratic opponent Randy Nichols of Knoxville said, “I’m the guy who’s running on the income tax. This state has a crisis ... we have got to have enough to pay the necessary bills.” Republican front-runner Van Hilleary emphasized, “I am against the income...
