According to CBS Sacramento, Rocklin High School’s Julianne Benzel said all she did was have a conversation with her class last Thursday and Friday about the “politics of protest” — a lesson ahead of yesterday’s school walkouts. However, this seems to have angered some students and their parents. Benzel said...

Applicants will receive no penalties for walkout-related suspensions Ditching class won’t hurt your chances of gaining admission to the college of your dreams — and may even help — as long as you’re playing hooky in order to agitate for gun control. More than 200 universities, including Harvard, Yale and MIT, have rushed to reassure applicants that they won’t be penalized if they’re suspended or otherwise disciplined for participating in peaceful school walkouts spurred by the Feb. 14 mass shooting in Parkland, Florida. Not only that, but some university officials have commended and encouraged would-be protesters, leaving the impression that...

A school board in Wisconsin has agreed to pay $800,000 to settle a lawsuit in the case of a transgender former student born female who was initially denied the request to use boys' bathrooms. The Kenosha Unified School Board voted 5-2 Tuesday night in favor of the $800,000 settlement, Kenosha News reported. Lawyers said that $650,000 of that sum would go toward attorney's fees. The student, Ash Whitaker, a biological female who identifies as a male, claimed the school had carried out discriminatory practices in requiring that students use the bathrooms of the gender they were born with. Whitaker, who...

An Illinois judge denied a transgender student’s request Thursday to change clothes with female students in the girls’ locker room at a public high school. The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, which represents Nova Maday, a biologically male student at Palatine’s Township High School District 211, had petitioned a trial court last year, arguing the student should be treated like other females and not be forced to change clothes behind a curtain. But on Thursday, Judge Thomas Allen rejected the request, leaving the ACLU to consult with its client on how to move forward with the case. “Clearly, we...

Hundreds of New York City teachers who'd lost their full-time positions but stayed on the payroll will be headed back to classrooms within the next few weeks. About a third of those teachers, it turns out, have faced legal or disciplinary charges. The city's education department announced this summer that schools that hadn't filled all their teaching positions by Oct. 15 would be assigned educators from the "absent teacher reserve" pool. According to a spokesman at the New York City Department of Education, the "matches" between teachers and schools are being made now, and those teachers will go into schools...

A 911 call for a Davis High School student who needed medical attention led to the discovery that a number of students on campus had eaten brownies containing marijuana, Modesto City Schools reported Tuesday. About 2 p.m. Monday, a Modesto Fire Department engine crew responded to a report a student had fallen and had an altered level of consciousness. Due to "signs and symptoms observed," paramedics requested an air ambulance, Battalion Chief Darin Jesberg said. The helicopter landed, but a flight nurse evaluated the patient and determined she was stable enough to be taken to a local hospital by ground...

High school football games are typically considered to be good entertainment for the entire family. Maybe an older sibling is playing, so parents come with their younger children to watch them play and have fun all together. So given that high school football games are typically family events, it’s not surprising that parents were outraged when they saw what these cheerleaders were wearing. A video uploaded to FlyHeight shows cheerleaders performing in outfits that appear to be closer to lingerie than to cheerleading uniforms. Each cheerleader, believed to be from a high school in Miami, holds a bag and a...

SACRAMENTO — California has permanently scrapped its high school exit exam under legislation signed by Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday. The California High School Exit Examination was a requirement to receive a diploma in the state, but the legislature voted in 2015 to drop it for the high school classes of 2015 to 2018. Diplomas were retroactively awarded to anyone who met all other graduation requirements after the test became a mandatory must-pass exam in 2004. That resulted in an estimated 40,000 former high school students receiving their diplomas. The bill signed by Brown, AB830 by Ash Kalra, D-San Jose,...

This year’s homecoming royalty at Lincoln High assumed their respective thrones through a gender-neutral voting system that school officials hope is more inclusive. “It was a simple way we could be more inclusive to all our students and still bridge that with some traditions that we and other schools have in terms of homecoming,” said Principal Mark Larson. Lincoln High is the first LPS high school to make such a change. But Lincoln High joins a growing number of high schools and colleges across the country moving to gender-neutral roles for homecoming royalty. Those include the University of Nebraska at...

An Alabama school district decided to halt its decades-old practice of reciting the Lord’s Prayer over a loudspeaker before high school football games after atheists complained — but that did little to stop fans from still belting out the biblical invocation. About 70% of Los Angeles high school graduates enroll in two- or four-year colleges, but only 25% graduate within six years. ... it’s hard to assess recent district efforts that could be seen as pushing in different directions. On one hand, the district is touting higher standards: a high school graduation requirement that all students pass the courses necessary for applying to a four-year state college. On the other hand, the district requires a grade of D only in these classes and the colleges require a C or better to apply. The district also offers an array of “credit recovery”...
