Conor McGinn said he was 'living the message of the gospel in this Holy Week'A Catholic Labour MP has introduced a bill that would legalise same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland, saying that he is “living the message of the gospel in this Holy Week”. Conor McGinn, who was born in Northern Ireland but currently represents St Helens North in northern England, described himself as a practicing Catholic and hinted that God would approve of the bill. “I am a practicing Catholic, now my parish priest would undoubtedly say that I probably need to practice a little bit more,” he joked....

British Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on Monday wrote to Jewish leaders that he is a “militant opponent” of anti-Semitism. Corbyn’s letter to the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council came after British Jewish leaders sent an open letter to the Labour party in which they wrote that Corbyn had “sided with anti-Semites rather than Jews.” The letter sent to Member of Parliament John Cryer, chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party, said, “Today, leaders of British Jewry tell Jeremy Corbyn that enough is enough. We have had enough of hearing that Jeremy Corbyn ‘opposes anti-Semitism,’ whilst the mainstream majority of...

Theresa May’s government has admitted that “a significant portion” of the more than 400 Islamic State fighters who have returned to Britain are at large, unpunished, having been deemed “no longer of national security concern”. The admission came in response to a question in the House of Commons by Labour MP John Woodcock, who demanded to know why the Government is refusing to release figures on the number of returned jihadists being prosecuted, despite having previously provided them. “Are more than 400 of those returning individuals in jail or going through the court system? We simply do not know, because...

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is pressing his long-held view that voters should be given a chance to re-think Brexit once plans for Britain’s departure from the European Union are clear. Blair said Thursday that the Labour Party he led for 13 years should be actively challenging Brexit rather than going along with plans laid out by Prime Minister Theresa May and her Conservative Party allies. May’s government is negotiating exit plans and the outlines of a new trade relationship with the EU with an eye toward departing the bloc by a March 2019 deadline. Blair and other opponents...

This comes as the US leader tweeted last night that "only one thing will work with North Korea" in response to failed diplomatic efforts. Tensions between the Trump administration and Kim Jong-Un has dramatically escalated in recent weeks. Speaking to Sky News, Mrs Thornberry said: "I wouldn’t ever change my tone with Trump. "I would...

Just over an hour before the polls closed on Thursday, I took a call from a member of the Shadow Cabinet. ‘There’s a strong possibility Jeremy’s going to resign tonight,’ they said. ‘He’s not going to Labour HQ from his count. They’re going to try to keep him away from people, and see if they can get him to change his mind.’ There was no need to keep him away from people. The people were coming to him – in numbers not seen for a Labour leader since the 2001 Blair landslide.

John McDonnell tried to weaken our cash-strapped military by allowing taxpayers to 'opt out' of helping to fund them, it has been revealed. Records from the House of Commons show that in 2014 the Shadow Chancellor proposed a motion to allow voters direct the portion of their income tax that goes towards defence into a 'non-military security fund'. In 1999 the longtime Corbyn ally tried to change the law so taxpayers could divert the money spent on defence into foreign aid. Armed Forces minister Mike Penning told the Sun: 'Security would be at risk with John McDonnell holding the purse...

A furious row erupted inside and outside the Labour party last night after former London mayor Ken Livingstone was “given a slap on the wrist” over anti-Semitic comments. Mr. Livingstone — who had been suspended from the party last April over remarks saying Hitler had supported Zionism — was handed a further 12-month ban from representing Labour. He will remain a full member of the party and will still be allowed to take part in Labour votes and attend meetings. But MPs, including some from his own party’s shadow cabinet, described the move as “shameful” and said the party leadership...

A councillor from Britain’s Labour party who was suspended after being accused of sharing blood libels online and for saying Israeli Jews should “relocate” to America has been readmitted to the party, the British Jewish News reported on Wednesday. The councillor, Ilyas Aziz from Nottingham, tweeted on December 31, “Can resume my Labour Party activities now that my suspension lifted. Thanks to all who stood by me in difficult times.” Aziz, a supporter of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, implied in a Facebook post in 2014 that Israelis should “stop drinking Gaza’s blood,” which he allegedly retweeted from a Muslim youth...

Britain's exit from the EU could be blocked, Tony Blair has said, as he ruled out a return to frontline politics because there is “too much hostility” towards him. The former Labour prime minister said he had been accused of “treason” for suggesting that Britain keep its “options open” over Brexit. But he insisted that voters had a right to decide they want to stay in the EU after “scrutinising” Theresa May’s final deal with European leaders.

The leader of Britain’s opposition Labour Party says Prime Minister Theresa May’s government is resisting “democratic scrutiny” of the Brexit process because it has not developed any plans for leaving the 28-nation bloc. Jeremy Corbyn on Saturday called on May to immediately spell out her Brexit negotiating terms to Parliament now that Britain’s High Court has ruled that Parliament must give its approval before formal talks begin. …

Jeremy Corbyn indicated that the Labour Party will not try and block Britain’s departure from the European Union after the pivotal High Court ruling in London on Thursday said that Prime Minister Theresa May has to get approval from parliament to trigger Article 50. “Labour respects the decision of the British people to leave the European Union,” the Labour Party leader said in a statement. “But there must be transparency and accountability to parliament on the terms of Brexit.”
