The IRS on Thursday settled two lawsuits alleging the agency illegally targeted conservative groups under the Obama administration. One of the settlements stipulated the IRS issue a formal apology for illegally singling out conservative and tea party groups due to their political beliefs dating back to 2013. Representative John Fleming (R-La.), a member of the House Freedom Caucus, filed a motion on Tuesday to bring a “privileged resolution” to the House floor calling for the impeachment of IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. It seems that the House Judiciary Committee is considering seeking the help of the Justice Department to enforce contempt citations against Bush Administration officials such as Joshua Bolton who refuse to respond to Congressional inquiries into alleged White House wrongdoing. That would be a mistake. Such a strategy leaves Congress beholden to hostile Executive branch officials to enforce its prerogatives on exactly the type of charges that the administration said this week it would not allow officials to pursue.
