ABU DHABI — Qatar, under pressure from the Arab League, is said to have expelled the Muslim Brotherhood. Diplomatic sources said Doha deported dozens of exiled Brotherhood leaders who escaped Egypt in 2013. The sources said the Brotherhood operatives flew to Egypt’s neighbor Libya and joined Islamist militias. “The Brotherhood people were given three days to pack their bags and get on the plane to Tripoli,” a source said. The sources did not identify those deported. But they said several of them were on a list of 15 Brotherhood and Hizbullah operatives submitted by Saudi Arabia last month. In March...

Libya’s parliament swore in a new prime minister Sunday despite a disputed vote and walkouts from a largely secular bloc, lawmakers and a Libyan television reported. Despite the protest from a number of non-Islamist parliamentarians, the interim parliament swore in 42-year-old businessman Ahmed Matiq in a televised session headed by the second deputy of parliament, Saleh al-Makhzoum, and member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Justice and Construction Party. […] Al-Sharif al-Wafi, an independent lawmaker from Benghazi, said the swearing-in was unconstitutional and defied democratic principles. He said the second deputy of parliament continued the session after first deputy Ezzeddin al-Awami had...

On Feb. 12, about two years after the U.S. government first militarily intervened in Libya to advance the cause of Libyan revolutionaries and five months after Libyan terrorists murdered Amb. Chris Stevens and three other Americans in that country, the post-revolutionary Libyan government arrested a U.S. citizen for allegedly “proselytizing” Christianity in Benghazi. As of today, according to both a senior administration official and a State Department spokesperson, this U.S. citizen remains imprisoned in post-Qaddafi Libya. The Libyan government also arrested seven other Christians in Benghazi in connection with the same alleged case of Christian proselytizing. These include a South...

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama hailed Libya's election on Saturday as a milestone in its post-Gaddafi democratic transition and pledged that the United States would act as a partner even as he cautioned there would still be difficult challenges ahead. "After more than 40 years in which Libya was in the grip of a dictator, today's historic election underscores that the future of Libya is in the hands of the Libyan people," Obama said in a statement after Libyans went to the polls in what was widely seen as turning the page on Muammar Gaddafi's autocratic legacy. Despite the fractious...
