POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — One of the highly popular festivals in the state, the Mothman Festival in Mason County, has been canceled due to COVID-19. Organizers said in a Facebook post on Thursday, “Due to many unknown factors and the guidelines for fairs and festivals now set forth by the state of West Virginia because of COVID 19, we are postponing Mothman Festival 2020.” The event, that commemorates the 1966 Point Pleasant Mothman sighting that gave birth to the infamous red-eyed winged legend, had been scheduled for Sept. 19 and 20. The restrictions in place would affect the guest speakers,...

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. -- Tuesday marks the 48th anniversary of the Silver Bridge collapse that killed 46 people and changed a small West Virginia town forever. It happened Dec., 15, 1967, during rush hour traffic in Point Pleasant. The investigation of the collapse pointed to a single eyebar in a suspension chain due to a defect. All but two victims were found in the debris. The bridge was replaced by the Silver Memorial Bridge two years later in 1969. *Photo from WV Archives at the Culture Center VIDEO ON LINK

A new study from researchers in Europe claims that the average IQ in Western nations dropped by a staggering 14.1 points over the past century. "We tested the hypothesis that the Victorians were cleverer than modern populations using high-quality instruments, namely measures of simple visual reaction time in a meta-analytic study," the researchers wrote in the study, which was published online in the journal Intelligence on Thursday. "Simple reaction time measures correlate substantially with measures of general intelligence and are considered elementary measures of cognition."-snip- The results were measured using data from 1889 to 2004 and were analyzed by Michael...

The Mothman is a creature reportedly seen in the Charleston and Point Pleasant areas of West Virginia from November 12, 1966, to December 1967. Most observers describe the Mothman as a winged man-sized creature with large reflective red eyes and large wings. The creature was sometimes reported as having no head, with its eyes set into its chest. A number of hypotheses have been presented to explain eyewitness accounts, ranging from misidentification and coincidence, to paranormal phenomena and conspiracy theories. The word "Mothman" was an invention by an Ohio newspaper copyeditor, after the first news stories of the "Big Bird"...
