This arsenal of firearms is among the dozens of weapons that have been taken off London’s streets during the Met’s latest gun amnesty. Since Monday 45 weapons have been surrendered across the capital as part of the Give Up Your Gun campaign, including shotguns, revolvers, rifles and handguns, Scotland Yard said. Detectives from the Met’s gang unit today urged anyone still in possession of an illegal firearm to hand it in before the amnesty ends on Sunday night.

For Obama, who has carefully cultivated a reputation of easily managing confrontations with people who disagree with him, these moments are as rare as they are revealing of the person behind the presidency. So it’s no surprise that Washington took notice when after a tense interview with...

President Obama has lost his "cool" vote - the 2008 coalition of young, liberal voters that greatly secured his presidential win. A recent Pew poll reveals that voters under the age of 30 are disenchanted and lagging in enthusiasm, which could severely hurt Democrats in upcoming elections. The age group has been the strongest for the Democratic Party in the past three elections, especially in 2008. Fox News Exit Polls showed that 66 percent of voters age 18-29 voted for Barack Obama, translating to 15.6 million votes.
  • Barack Obama 'too tired' to give proper welcome to Gordon Brown

Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president has facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told. Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest. British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a...
  • Obama wins over heavily-Republican suburbs

Chicago Democrat Barack Obama did what at one time seemed politically impossible: win throughout the suburban region long considered home base for the GOP. In DuPage County, where Republicans for decades have counted on strong turnout to boost the GOP ticket, Obama won 54 percent of the vote with 99 percent of the precincts in. To put Obama's early, unofficial total in DuPage County in perspective, his more than 224,000 votes there are nearly as many votes as Ronald Reagan received there in his 1984 landslide over Democrat Walter Mondale. Not only are Obama's votes the most a Democrat has...

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Leipzig, Germany, plan to reconstruct the genome of Neanderthals, the archaic human species that occupied Europe from 300,000 years ago until 30,000 years ago until being displaced by modern humans. The genome will initially be reconstructed using DNA extracted from Neanderthal bones that are 45,000 years old, which were found in Croatia, though bones from other sites may be analyzed later. The project is a collaboration between Dr. Svante Paabo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, and 454 Life Sciences, a Connecticut company that has...
