A giant rhino that may have been the origin of the unicorn myth survived until at least 39,000 years ago - much longer than previously thought. Known as the Siberian unicorn, the animal had a long horn on its nose, and roamed the grasslands of Eurasia. New evidence shows the hefty beast may have eventually died out because it was such a picky eater. Scientists say knowing more about the animal's extinction could help save the remaining rhinos on the planet. Rhinos are in particular danger of extinction because they are very picky about their habitat, said Prof Adrian Lister...

As many as 145 whales have died after being found stranded on a remote beach in New Zealand, conservation officials said Monday. Two pods of pilot whales were discovered just over a mile apart on Mason Bay, Stewart Island, a sparsely populated island in the country's south. Authorities were first alerted to the mass stranding by a hiker Saturday evening. Half of the whales were already dead. The remaining animals were later euthanized, according to New Zealand's Department of Conservation (DOC). A Stewart Island operations manager for the DOC, Ren Leppens, said that the remote location and condition of the...

A total of 10 expensive koi fish have now been killed and eaten by the otter as of Sunday morning; there were previously 14 adult koi living in the ponds at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Park in Chinatown. As a result, staff at the Chinatown park have begun evacuating koi from the park’s ponds. On Saturday, crews moved in to begin rescue efforts. So far, only one fish has been moved to the Vancouver Aquarium for safekeeping; koi are also difficult to capture so it remains unclear how long the evacuation will take though crews are working to relocate the remaining...

A farmer died after his dog knocked over a lever in his forklift truck, causing it to move forward and push him against a gate, causing fatal injuries, an inquest heard on Friday. Derek Mead was constructing a rock garden at his residence in Hewish, near Weston-super Mare, in Somerset, England, on June 4, 2017, the BBC reported. The 70-year-old farmer left his furry friend, a Jack Russell terrier, inside the machine as it was running but left it in neutral as he went to open the gate leading to his land, the Evening Standard reported. The dog was believed...

This is the incredible moment two honey badgers took on three lions who then ran away from the tiny aggressors. The small badgers were confronted with the much larger predators on a dirt road on a safari in South Africa. But instead of running away from the 'Kings of the Jungle' the brave carnivores were not intimidated and stood their ground. The pair of black and white weasel-like mammals hissed and snarled at the lions so much the trio were scared off and ran away.

Shira Plotzker did not set out to become a pet psychic. It just sort of happened. She was sitting at home in Nyack, New York, watching the animal communicator Sonya Fitzpatrick on TV. Suddenly, the dog that was talking to Fitzpatrick started talking to her. “He told me he thought it was a lot of fun to be on TV! And he was very proud of himself for doing so good.” Realizing she had abruptly developed the ability to communicate with animals, Plotzker expanded her existing psychic business to cater to pets. Fifteen or so years later, business is booming,...

Police have named the man who died at a Hobart beach from a suspected stingray puncture wound, while an expert in the marine species has urged calm despite increased numbers of the animals in Tasmanian waters. Nicolas Ricketts, 42, died from cardiac arrest on Saturday shortly after he sustained the injury to his lower abdomen, believed to have been inflicted by a stingray, while swimming at Lauderdale, east of Hobart. Friends and family of Mr Ricketts, known widely as "Ned" who worked as a plumber and had served with the Australian Navy, gathered at the spot where he died yesterday....

Officials with the Oklahoma City Fire Department said there were 28 children and three teachers on the playground at the time of the attack. In all, 12 students were taken to a hospital for treatment – nine for superficial bites and others for scrapes and bruises as children tried to run away from the dog. "The dog came on and started to attack some of the kids, and then of course the kids began to scream and panic, which excited the dog and scared the dog even more, so his natural instinct was to keep biting and going after the...

Jessica Turnbow was on mile 16 of her 19-mile training run for her first 26.2 at the Las Vegas Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon when a bee buzzed by her ear along the canal path in Chandler, Arizona. The canal paths were one of her favorite running routes, and she ran there often, even passing that spot just five minutes prior before she turned around to finish her run. The bee was persistent. Because of that distraction, and someone cutting grass nearby, she wasn’t able to see the swarm of bees around her. “Before I could even think, I had a...

A pest controller has snared a monster 21-inch long rat he believes is the biggest ever caught in Britain. Terry Walker, 53, was working with his trusty dog Max when they trapped the enormous creature as it was shuffling from beneath some rubbish behind a row of shops in Bournemouth on Friday. The catch means Mr Walker has regained the record he lost last year to rival exterminator Daren George.

What's the one thing you always wish you had around the festive period? You've already got a case of the finest ales, had a drone last year that you became really bored with, really quick and an unlimited supply of pigs in blankets are a given. So, there's only one thing left and that's to light up your beard with Christmas lights, right?! If you've been blessed with a good chin of facial hair (unlike myself, thankfully) this is surely going to be top of the list. Firebox is selling beard fairy lights that flash (added bonus) meaning they're definitely...

We all know it’s irritating, unsightly and unhygienic, but one case of dog fouling has been logged by police as a racist hate crime. The incident is among numerous alleged hate crimes uncovered by The Mail on Sunday that critics say are so petty they are undeserving of police time and expense. Further examples in a list of more than 2,500 alleged ‘hate incidents’ logged by the Metropolitan Police in 2015 and 2016 include: An envelope that had been opened and resealed; An accident involving a car that bore a Remembrance poppy; A disputed line call in a tennis match;...

Small birds are having a big moment. Tiny turkeys will increasingly grace Thanksgiving tables next week, thanks to the millennial generation’s ongoing campaign to remake American gastronomy. The holiday depicted by Norman Rockwell—Grandma showing off a cooked bird so plump it weighs down a banquet plate—is still common. But smaller families, growing guilt over wasteful leftovers and a preference for free-range fowl have all played roles in the emergence of petite poultry as a holiday dinner centerpiece. “People are starting to understand it’s not natural to grow turkeys up to 30 pounds,” said Ariane Daguin, co-founder and owner of D’Artagnan...
