Favourite is subjective. Many people have a favourite guitarist, drummer and bassist, but there is no definitive answer; the beauty is that everyone is right in their opinion, as whatever moves them the most is rightly their favourite. However, while we have to respect everyone’s opinion, someone like Ray Charles, who is often dubbed one of the most influential and iconic musicians in history, has one that carries a little bit more weight to it. So, when he describes Carol Kaye as the world’s best bassist, we better hear him out. Carol Kaye has always been in demand as a...

Ray Charles and The Judds joined the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday in a ceremony filled with tears, music and laughter, just a day after Naomi Judd died unexpectedly. The loss of Naomi Judd altered the normally celebratory ceremony, but the music played on, as the genre’s singers and musicians mourned the country legend while also celebrating the four inductees: The Judds, Ray Charles, Eddie Bayers and Pete Drake. Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Vince Gill and many more performed their hit songs. Naomi and Wynonna Judd were among the most popular duos of the 1980s, scoring 14 No....

[Snip] Yes, we've lost some already. On top of the icons who died horribly young decades ago — Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, John Lennon — there's the litany of legends felled by illness, drugs, and just plain old age in more recent years: George Harrison, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Glenn Frey, Prince, Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty. Those losses have been painful. But it's nothing compared with the tidal wave of obituaries to come. The grief and nostalgia will wash over us all. Yes, the Boomers left alive will take it...

Marcus Belgrave, a jazz trumpeter who graced stages and studios with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Cocker and Motown artists galore, died Sunday. He was 78. Belgrave died at an Ann Arbor care facility and the cause of death was heart failure, said Hazelette Crosby-Robinson, a cousin of Belgrave's wife Joan. Belgrave remained active on the Detroit and international jazz scenes up until his death. Born into a family of musicians in Chester, Pennsylvania, he started playing professionally at 12 and joined The Ray Charles Band in the late 1950s — what he once described as "the beginning...

There was a song Ray Charles used to hum in the back of his car on the way to the gig. A few hours later, on the way back from the gig, he'd hum it all over again. The paying customers in between never got to hear the tune, only Ray's chauffeur. "Cat said, 'You hum it so much, why don't you record it?' recalled Charles. "I said, "cause I don't even know the words."' The driver pointed out he could learn them. So he did: "Georgia, Georgia The whole day through Just an old sweet song Keeps Georgia On...

BOOK REVIEW & DISCUSSION: Ain't Got No Cigarettes: Memories of Music Legend Roger Miller By Lyle E Style "It's an endless story about Roger. He was one of the cleverest people I've ever met in my life." (Waylon Jennings) This is my own review of Ain't Got No Cigarettes, the first Roger Miller book ever published. My review is based on reading the book (twice) and having several discussions with Lyle E Style, the author. He may stop by later to answer questions (as his schedule allows). This one is a must-read, folks. And for you radio personalities who...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- In the 1992 film "White Men Can't Jump," dimwitted Billy (Woody Harrelson) and his sassy girlfriend Gloria (Rosie Perez) are riding in a convertible and listening to a cassette of Ray Charles' classic country album, "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music." As Charles croons "Careless Love," Billy asks, "Would somebody please explain to me why this Negro is singing cowboy music?" "You know, this is my favorite song," Gloria says. "It makes me think about making love to you. It makes me want to just take you, and lock you up in a room, and make...

We are signing this petition as an appeal to place the image of Ray Charles on the U.S. Treasury's ten dollar bill. Upon Mr. Charles' recent passing, we are reminded of the impact this great American had on the development of American culture and music. Known as "The Genius" since the early 1950s, Ray Charles is a founding father of modern rhythm and blues, jazz, rock and gopsel music. In the course of his remarkable life and career, Mr. Charles overcame personal adversity in the forms of blindness, extreme poverty, racial oppression and drug-addiction to become one of the most...

FILM REVIEW; Portrait Of Genius, Painted In Music By A.O. SCOTT Published: October 29, 2004, Friday WHEN Ray Charles died in June, he had ascended to the most rarefied level of fame; no longer merely a celebrity, he had become an institution. There is no doubt that he deserved this status, or that he enjoyed it, but universal esteem is not always a blessing for an artist. Some of Charles's music has become so familiar that we risk growing deaf to the audacity and innovation that made it great in the first place. The opening bars of ''Hit the Road...

Women see scarlet, men see red Jennifer Viegas Discovery News Wednesday, 4 August 2004 The world may appear a more colourful place to women, according to a new study that finds many women perceive a greater range of colours than men, particularly shades of red. The U.S. study, which analysed DNA from populations around the world, is published in the September issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics. How men and women see the world appears to relate to evolution and how our early ancestors found food. Men were likely to have been surveying the landscape for prey to...
