ILLESHEIM, Germany — Under pressure from the battle-scarred soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division, the Pentagon on July 23 announced its Middle East deployment plans for the Army’s 10 divisions — a move that gave some order to the future of tens of thousands of military families. What the Army still has not addressed, though, is the future of thousands of troops from Germany who deployed in late 2002 and early 2003 with V Corps support units. Among the absent: the Heidelberg-based headquarters staff, the Giebelstadt-based 12th Aviation Brigade, the Illesheim-based 11th Aviation Regiment, the Darmstadt-based 22nd Signal Brigade and...

ARLINGTON, Va. — One day after announcing plans to cover the next two years of deployments to Iraq, Army officials Thursday still were tweaking those schedules and scrambling to update divisional officials. On Wednesday, Gen. John Keane, the Army’s acting chief of staff, listed the plans for several Army divisions, but failed to make any mention of when V Corps soldiers might be coming home. On Thursday, Army staffers from Washington to Germany couldn’t answer any time line questions about Germany-based V Corps troops, referring media questions back and forth across the ocean between public affairs officials in the States...

Just outside the VIP lounge at the former Saddam International Airport, a sign is taped to the door. It reads: "Stay Out or Die." One might be tempted to assume the dire warning is left over from the ruthless government of Saddam Hussein. But, in fact, it was posted by members of the 101st Airborne Division as a means to stake out a prime spot to sleep. The subtext of the sign reads: "Well, you'll at least lose a hand or something." AMERICAN forces won a decisive victory during their first clash with Saddam’s Republican Guard yesterday, killing scores of the elite troops and wiping out a column of Iraqi armour. The 101st Airborne Division - nicknamed the "Screaming Eagles" - launched a devastating strike against Republican Guard tank units near the Iraqi holy city of Najaf. At least 50 Iraqi soldiers from Saddam’s ultra-loyal Medina Division were killed during the attack by Apache helicopter gunships, which destroyed 25 tanks, armoured personnel carriers and trucks. No US casualties were reported from enemy fire, although one pilot was injured in a "hard landing"...
