The Sunday and Monday launches were postponed due to “upper level winds not being within the limits for a safe launch.” The original launch was planned for last Friday, but has been moved each night due to the weather. The goal of the mission is to study how energy and momentum is transported between regions of space that are connected magnetically. This study will help scientists better understand things like Auroras and how they are formed and their movement from place to place.

A mission to explore energy transport in space using a NASA suborbital sounding rocket launching May 8, 2021, from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia may provide a brief light show for residents of the eastern United States and Bermuda. The mission is scheduled for no earlier than 8:02 p.m. EDT with a 40-minute launch window, Saturday, May 8. Backup launch days run through May 16. The launch may be visible, weather permitting, in much of the eastern United States from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi River. A four-stage Black Brant XII rocket will be used for the mission...

On Thursday, November 15, ...NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility and Virginia’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport will support the launch of Northrop Grumman’s Antares rocket and Cygnus cargo spacecraft, which will bring crew supplies and hardware including science and research materials, to the International Space Station. The rocket is set to launch at 4:49 a.m. The area directly around Wallops Island will have the best visibility — Wallops and Chincoteague will be able to see the rocket in the sky within 10 seconds of launch. 30 seconds after launch, Maryland and Virginia’s eastern shores will be able to see it, and within one...
  • Orbital ATK Aborts Rocket Launch to Space Station Due to Wayward Plane

    Space.com ^ | Hanneke Weitering,
A cargo resupply mission scheduled to launch to the International Space Station this morning (Nov. 11) was aborted at the last minute due to aircraft flying in the restricted airspace over the launch site at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility here in Wallops Island, Virginia. Orbital ATK's Antares rocket was one minute away from liftoff when flight controllers abruptly aborted the launch at 7:36 a.m. EST (1236 GMT), when the aircraft entered the restricted area.  With the five-minute launch window closed for the day, Orbital ATK rescheduled the Antares launch for no earlier than 7:14 a.m. EST (1214 GMT) on Sunday...

NASA's first deep-space mission to launch from Virginia's Eastern Shore is scheduled for Friday, and while all eyes are on the sky, most of the uncertainty swirls around what will happen on the ground, on tiny Chincoteague Island, where hotels, restaurants and traffic cops must deal with thousands of spectators. On one hand, the town has experience: every summer, it deals with an estimated 15,000 tourists who come for the famous pony roundup. But Friday's spectacle is different in so many ways. NASA's visitor center on Va. 175, a popular spot for watching rocket launches from the Wallops Flight Facility,...

WALLOPS ISLAND The escape worked beautifully. Forty minutes after sunrise Wednesday, a chubby little rocket left the pad at NASA’s facility here, climbing 7,000 feet into the cool morning air. Less than a minute later, after 16 separate pyrotechnic events, nine parachute deployments and a perfect tailwind, NASA’s newest astronaut escape pod was floating safely down toward the Atlantic off the Eastern Shore. The unpiloted test was conducted in conjunction with NASA’s Constellation Program, which is designing the Orion spacecraft to take humans to the International Space Station by 2015 and to the moon by 2020. NASA already has one...

WALLOPS ISLAND To take advantage of better weather, officials at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport have moved up the planned launch of a $60 million rocket to 7:35 tonight. The launch of the Minotaur I rocket, which carries several satellites, has been delayed twice because of storms. The launch window will be open until 11 p.m. today. If weather interferes again, another attempt could be made Saturday night. For updates on the launch, follow NASA_Wallops on Twitter.
