This story always interested me because my 2nd cousin in Newport RI had been engaged to his son and broke off the engagement a few weeks before the wedding because she considered him too immature. I know she told me the story but it’s one of those that went in one ear and couldn’t wait to get out the other.

No Astor relations, but my grandmother told me that her aunt (and as you will see, uncle) perished on the Titanic. I had trouble tracking down exactly which ones, but she told me that her aunt refused to get in a lifeboat without her husband. Her grandmother's maiden name was Carter, and she immigrated from England. There was a Carter couple on the Titanic whose story fit her description. The link says that he refused to get in the lifeboat, and she would not leave without him, but according to other sources, places in the lifeboat were for women and children, only, so he, especially being a man of the cloth, would have been ineligible.
