Gavin Newsom Proposes Cutting 10,000 Vacant State Jobs to Close State Deficit

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) announced his proposed $288 billion state budget, which would cut thousands of vacant state jobs and funding to more than 200 state programs in order to close the state’s $27.6 billion deficit.

Newsom revealed his budget proposal on Friday for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, which starts on July 1, citing the importance of accountability and responsibility, according to ABC7 News.

This comes a month after state officials agreed to reduce California’s deficit by $17.3 billion after Newsom announced in January that the state’s deficit was $37.9 billion. The state deficit ended up being closer to $45 billion, which was $7 billion more than Newsom and state officials had estimated.

Positions that are currently not filled are also not getting paychecks. So there’s no cash outflow. And that’s how you get rid of a deficit?

How does cutting a “vacant job” save money?

If the jobs are vacant, how does cutting them save money? Are they phantom employees?

“California custom GAAP”. We wouldn’t understand even if they COULD explain it. ;-)

I’ll guess this is roughly $100,000 annually on average for those 10,000 jobs.

That’s 1/27th of the $27 billion deficit they’re running for next year as a baseline and unfortunately for these Rats, people are sick paying for slackers and illegals. Even recent college graduates are trending toward Trump now in a steady pace.

If they are “vacant” then there should be no money outlay for wages.

Unless, being Calif the wages are there, just being funneled into democrat slush funds?

Yeah, cutting “vacant” positions won’t save any $$ initially, but it is an annual budget proposal so no new “hires” to fill the vacant positions is where the savings comes....supposedly...I doubt they would have filled all those 10,000 positions over the next year.

What interests me is the proposed “...cuts funding to more than 200 state programs”...I will have to check out that list...hopefully some real B.S. “ringer” waste programs on that list.

Mister Newsom.

Wanna cut where it counts?

Three words...

High Speed Rail

It will never be completed anyway, of course.

Let’s see . . . $27,600,000,000 / 10,000 unpaid people = $2.76 million per person in real savings. Sounds legit.

Re: "Are they phantom employees?"

Work from home, located outside the USA?

Why bother to emigrate if you can draw a California pay check without leaving Ethiopia or Bangladesh?

Not that I expect it, but wouldn’t it be something if President Trump walks away with California’s electoral votes in November? They could cheat WI, PA, AZ, NV, MI real good and it would be a wash.

Newsom should give these jobs to illegals - uh, I mean “newcomers”.

I’m lost. Cutting vacant job (no payroll since no worker) saves money? What kind on Biden economics is this? “Save money by not spending on vacant jobs when you are not paying because they are vacant?

Ok... I’m not an economist or financial advisor (though I did sleep at a holiday inn last night...) but... if they’re “vacant”...they’re not PAYING for those positions anyway so how does that save money?
