Man Beats Victim On New York Street While Witnesses Do Nothing
The Truth About Guns ^ | 05/15/18 | Dan Zimmerman

Posted on 05/15/2018 6:59:48 PM PDT by Simon Green

Do we really need to say it? “A man was clobbered by a stranger during a robbery on a Bronx sidewalk — as at least six passersby watched but did nothing to help, surveillance video released by police Tuesday shows.”

The surveillance footage, released by authorities Tuesday morning, shows the individual boisterously yelling at his 49-year-old victim. The video later cuts to footage of the victim being thrown to the ground from out of the camera’s view.

The attacker begins yanking the knapsack from the 49-year-old victim’s back while repeatedly hitting the man’s head, snatching his wallet, and then fleeing — all as witnesses stroll by, the video shows.

Why didn’t the victim or any of the passersby on the street do a thing to help? OK, we’ll say it. This is what happens to a disarmed populace. And we’ll get more of this as efforts to disarm gun owners and make gun ownership more difficult and expensive advance in various states.

When you have no experience with combat, you say stupid things.

We forgive you.

Sort of.

In a reasonable jurisdiction, though (i.e. not including NY or other viciously gun-grabbing states) what about the reasonable man test? If a reasonable man reasonably believed that deadly force was needed to halt grievous injury or death of another, how would it shake out if, in fact, the “thug” was an officer and the “gentleman” was a felon. My first thought is that police would self-identify under the circumstances. My second is that police are always armed, so they’re not going to beat the crap out of somebody when they could detain them at gunpoint.

Third thought: If the officer has already won the fight, he won’t continue trashing the suspect.

I promise you that when the victim recovers with minor injuries you are going to prison.

"...reasonable person..."

Agreed. Your points are absolutely and totally valid.
My comfort level is such that I would only engage if the safety of me, my family, or friends was threatened.

Two utter and complete strangers fighting in the street? I’ll call 9-1-1 and have them sort it out.
I do not have the time to get named in someone’s civil or criminal lawsuit.
Too much other good things happening in my life. :-)

Boom....I was nearby that day (`1964)...I swore that if I ever had the chance to “save” her, I would. I am now almost 70 years old, but I am ready. On any given day, I carry, have a knife, a good pepper spray + my own training. So far, from 1964, I have not yet avenged Kitty, but I hope I do, for the right reasons. If not that specifically, something that is good & righteous. I have drawn on two occasions for effect, but that was for personal defense, not for “Kitty” or my wife. I have 15 rounds on on board. I am prepared. My vehicle has another 300.

Whole lotta people here who wouldn’t survive a week living in NYC.

My anticipation is that most FReepers would likely survive the ordeal of a week spent there, yet would be surprised by the decades in prison they would likely face for getting involved in a street fight between two complete strangers if a firearm was employed.

Daytime city violence is almost always for-cause. The random violence is a nighttime activity.

For all any observer knew, the attacker was retaliating against someone who just attempted to abduct his little sister, or it was a black market deal gone bad, or any of a thousand other situations where it would be a bad idea for any non-law-enforcement third party to get involved.

The one time in NYC that I saw a situation that appeared on its face to genuine justify physical intervention against an attacker, the attacker turned out to be a federal agent, as was the guy he shot.

Whoa, that is a wild story. Holy crap.
It is also precisely a good reason to just keep moving if witnessing a street fight.
It is different if it is you, family, or friends are attacked...yet intervening for strangers seems a recipe for disaster.

Really? Have you been watching lately. Cops shoot dogs, kids, women, crawling men ..... cops should die painfully - ok only the 90 percent that give the 10 percent a bad name.

It depends on the victim. Mostly I’d assume it’s a gang thing and keep walking. In the Bronx you mind your own business if you want to live to make it back to your apartment.

A whole lotta people here have zero, none, nada, desire to be anywhere near the sewers collectively known as New York state or New York city. New York and kommifornia are similar turds in the same toilet.

Not surprising.
You do not have the education to evaluate it.

You are forgiven anyway.
